Be My Valentine

Stampin’ Up! has begun tempting us with the prospects of Convention 2011.  These are three very short but very full days, andthe thing that every demonstrator look forward to is swapping.  It’s crazy, it’s frantic, and you never know what you’ll come home with – but you always come home with loads of great ideas.

Today’s card is cased from a card I received last year, and I have regretably lost the original stamper’s name.  I’ve cased this cards so many times, in so many different ways, and every time I see something new.

I {Heart} Hearts

  • I {Heart} Hearts and Filled with Love (retired) stamp sets
  • Very Vanilla and Crumb Cake card stock
  • Cherry Cobbler, Riding Hood Red, Crumb Cake, Early Espresso and Regal Rose classic ink pads
  • Piercing tool, mat and template
  • Cherry Cobbler seam binding; Stampin’ Dimensionals
  • Full Heart and Heart to Heart punches

Happy Valentines’ Day!

Baby, Baby, Baby

A friend had a baby girl recently.  We worked together to come up with a birth announcement, and it was one of the most enjoyable collaborations I’ve done.  It was clear from the outset that this wasn’t going to be a pinky-frou-frou announcement, and so we experimented with a lot of color combinations.  In the end, my friend came up with Rich Razzleberry and Pear Pizazz with just a touch of Melon Mambo and Daffodil Delight.  I would never in a million years have made those choices, but I was delighted with the way the colors worked together.

I made a samples in her color choices with all sorts of stamps.  When it came down to it, she couldn’t choose just one – so I made three different announcements:

Eastern Blooms baby

Baby announcement #1 uses the Eastern Elegance stamp set with the Bitty Punch pack and a 1/8 inch circle punch…

Cheep Talk Baby

Announcement #2 uses the Cheep Talk stamp set…

I {Heart} Hearts Baby

and Announcement #3 uses I {Heart} Hearts.

Hope you enjoy!

And an Owl in a Heart Tree

Ho man…this card…the title…it just gets dopier and dopier:

I {Heart} Hearts

  • I {Heart} Hearts and All Holidays stamp set
  • Whisper White, Pretty in Pink, Pear Pizazz, Chocolate Chip and Daffodil Delight card stock
  • A random scrap of Real Red Designer Series Paper
  • Real Red Classic ink pad; Pear Pizazz Stampin’ Write marker
  • XL Two Step Owl, XL Two Step Bird, and XL Blossoms Petal punches
  • Full Heart and Heart to Heart punches
  • Whisper White 3/8 inch taffeta and Real Red 1/4 inch grosgrain ribbon
  • Big Shot and Lattice Textured Impressions folder

Do you want my honest opinion?  This one needs to go back to the drawing board.  I was thinking of the Partridge in the Pear tree (yes, I have a Christmas Carol hangover) and a goofy owl in a tree/bush made from hearts came to mind.  I think it was cuter in my head.

The Owl’s little “thought bubble” is the wing from the XL Bird punch.

Dopey, dopey, dopey!

Enjoying color

I’m helping a friend with baby announcements and a few days ago I put together a few designs as a basis for brainstorming.   She chose something different, but I took this concept and completed it because I loved the colors:

Small Wonder

  • I {Heart} Hearts and a retired SAB sentiment stamp
  • Whisper White, Pretty in Pink, Rich Razzleberry and Marina Mist card stock
  • Pretty in Pink, Rich Razzleberry, Melon Mambo and Marina Mist Classic ink pads
  • Heart to Heart punch
  • Big Shot and Perfect Polka Dots Textured Embossing folder

I’m going to end up on the Naughty list for using another retired product, but sometimes they call my name!  I love the font and the sentiments from this retired Sale-a-bration set, and since it’s a clear mount set it doesn’t take up any room to speak of on my shelves.  The truth is that I have very few “baby” oriented products on my shelves, and it looks like it’s time to treat myself to some new stamps.  Oh, darn.

I like the intensity of these colors.  They’re not so strong that you have a neon feeling, but they balance each other well.  I’m sure there’s a more sophisticated color analysis, but you’re not going to get that from me.  I just know I like the combination.

Lovin’ our In Colors

True confession time…I beg, borrow and steal a lot of my ideas.  Today’s card was inspired by THIS card posted on the Stampin’ Addicts website.  I played with it and to continue in the true confessions theme, I’m not convinced that I like this version.  However, I definitely like our new In Color selection.  Poppy Parade is that perfect Red Hot Red color , Concord Crush is a deep indigo purple, Peach Parfait is a soft but saturated orange, Pear Pizzazz is a gorgeous spring green, and Blushing Bride….well, what can I say about a color called Blushing Bride?  It’s soft and not too pinky and very, very feminine.  Laurie’s card used all 5 colors and I borrowed her concept to accomplish the same result:

Hearts In Color

  • I {Heart} Hearts and Bella Toile stamp sets
  • Whisper White, Concord Crush, Poppy Parade, Blushing Bride, Peach Parfait and Pear Pizzazz card stock
  • Poppy Parade and Concord Crush Stampin’ Write Markers
  • Uniball Signo White Gel Pen; Tombo adhesive
  • Full Heart and Heart to Heart punches

The I {Heart} Hearts stamp set from the Occasions Mini catalog has made it into the new 2010-2011 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and catalog.  This set was selected for the Haitian Refugee Relief program through Stampin’ Up! and raised well over $20,000 for the American Red Cross.    Although the fundraising effort is complete, you can still purchase the stamp set as well as the coordinating Full Heart and Heart to Heart punches to make your own “heart-felt” greetings (Get it??  I crack myself up!)

Personally, I think Bella Toile is a bit of an overkill on this card and I’m going to make another using Woodgrain to see if I like it.  Stay tuned.

Grids ‘n Dots

Participating in the ColourQ challenge yesterday really helped motivate me, so I went looking for a challenge for today.  I found two – the Splitcoast Sketch Challenge and the Color Dare.  (And no, I am not going to look for 3 challenges tomorrow.  That would be totally unsustainable.)

Sometimes sketch challenges are too Out-Of-The-Box for me, but yesterday’s SCS Sketch Challenge (SC267) was just right.  I’ve been looking at repeating elements in cards and turning over some ideas in my head, so the timing was perfect.  When I sat down to put my ideas to work, I couldn’t settle on a color combination.  A quick search turned up the Color Dare site.  As you might guess, this is not a challenge for the faint of heart!  This week’s color challenge was Crushed Curry, Brilliant Blue, Kiwi Kiss and Kraft:

Grids and Dots

  • I {Heart} Hearts Clear Mount stamp set
  • Kraft, Brilliant Blue, and Whisper White card stock; Kiwi Kiss Designer Series Paper (retired)
  • Crushed Curry Classic ink pad
  • Crushed Curry polka dot ribbon
  • Big Shot and Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impression folder
  • 1 3/8″ and 1 1/4″ Square punches; Heart to Heart punch
  • Stampin Dimensionals, Tombo Adhesive, Mini Glue dots and Crystal Effects

The coolest thing about this card is that with the exception of the card base, the entire thing came from my scrap basket!!  That basket is out of control, and the more I use from it the happier I am.  There’s a Mini Glue dot holding the knot of the ribbon in place – with so much linear action it needed to be pegged down.   One more hint:  Use Stampin’ Dimensionals to hold a large panel on a deeply embossed card front.  Those dots are awesome, but they make it hard for adhesive to get a grip.

I didn’t see the grids emerge until I started to play with the hearts.  The Perfect Polka Dots textured impression folder was a natural once I realized I needed that Crushed Curry polka dot ribbon.  It was fun to play off the geometry of the repeating squares.

Vintage Style

I’ve always liked old things, whether they qualify as genuine antiques or not.  My grandmother had a house full of vintage furniture and glassware, and I inherited her appreciation for old things.   I have some of her furniture in my home now, and it makes me feel connected with her.

Her Victorian love seat is in my living room, and after Christmas as I was putting away decorations,  I remembered how we were never allowed to sit on it.  She had three straw hats that she would place across the seat to keep us from sitting  – I’m not sure if that was just for the summer when my sister and I would visit, or if she kept them there year round – but I’m sure that she was convinced they looked chic sitting there.  Of course, we weren’t fooled, but the memory makes me smile either way.

These hearts have nothing to do with those hats, but the kraft card base and the softer shades of red and pink give this card a look of comfortable age:

Vintage Style Valentine Hearts

  • I {Heart} Hearts, Bella Toile and Always stamp sets
  • Sahara Sand, Ruby Red, Close to Cocoa and Pretty in Pink Classic ink pads
  • Kraft, Ruby Red, Close to Cocoa and Naturals Ivory card stock
  • Stampin’ Sponges, Heart to Heart  and Scallop Trim punches and Kraft Taffeta ribbon

I think my grandmother would have liked this card.
