Slimline Cards and Dies

Have you made a slimline card? It’s an entirely different format and the possibilities are endless. Stampin’ Up! makes it easy with dies and stamps designed to work with this elongated card, and even offers beautiful envelopes to go along!

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Slim Dies Slim Sayings Slim Envelopes #handmadecard #diy #slimlinecard
  • Stamps: Peaceful Moments
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Basic Grey, Smokey Slate, So Saffron, Crushed Curry
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Slim Card dies, Stitched Rectangle dies, In Good Taste DSP, Stampin’ Write Markers, Linen Thread, Multipurpose Glue, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I put the chevron die from the Slim Card dies through the Big Boss with an assortment of colors, then chose what I liked best together. I really love yellow and grey together, and my objective was to create a masculine card. As a result there are no bows, sparkly bits, or other distractions – just the die and the sentiments. Well. And a teeny weeny bit of linen thread, because it’s basically rope, and rope is manly!

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Slim Dies Slim Sayings Slim Envelopes #handmadecard #diy #slimlinecard

I made a second version so that I could go landscape, and I REALLY like the way this turned out! I turned the template upside down so that the chevrons were going the other way (although since I also turned the entire card on its side there’s less of an impact). I used a variety of simple circles and embossed a few of them with the Brick and Mortar and Tasteful Textile 3D Embossing folders.

I also pulled out the Slim Sayings stamp set that is bundled with the Slim Card dies for the Happy Birthday sentiment. If you look very closely, you’ll see that it’s matted with a Stitched Rectangle. We don’t have one that fits exactly, but there’s a solution to that.

Choose a rectangle that’s the correct length and cut it out. Take it out of the Big Boss and mark the spot where you need to cut it in order to make it the right length. Now line up your rectangle die on the sides with the top of the die aligned with your mark. When you run it through the Big Boss, it will only cut that one line, and you’ll have a perfect, custom rectangle!

Beauty of the Earth in a Fun Fold

Cheryl, one of my Stampin’ BFFs, shared this fold with me. At the moment she did, I had Beauty of the Earth DSP on my craft desk and knew immediately what I wanted to do. I absolutely love the way these two designs work together, and I’m quite pleased with the end result:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Beauty of the Earth DSP Fun Fold handmade card
  • Stamps: Peaceful Moments (my absolute fave sentiment set!), Forever Fern
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Crushed Curry, Mossy Meadow
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Painted Labels dies, Stitched So Sweetly dies, Beauty of the Earth Designer Series Paper, Champagne Jewels, Stampin’ Dimensionals

This is a design called Double Dutch Door. It’s very simple, but the cutting takes a little time and precision. When you remove the belly band, the top panel opens upward, and there are 2 mini panels at the bottom that open out to the sides.

You can customize this one to your heart’s delight! I used both Mossy Meadow and Crushed Curry ink on the Forever Fern images – I just dunked the bottom half in one color and the top half in the other. You could call that a specific technique, or you could just call it lazy 😁

I’ve been making more of an effort to embellish my envelopes. Most often I add a layer of Designer Series paper to the flap, which would have been a great choice with this one, but I chose to use my “dunking” technique with the leaves instead. Do you embellish your envelopes? It doesn’t take much time at all – you just need to remember to do it.

There’s an entire suite called Beauty of the Earth. I chose to use just the paper for this project, but there’s a lot of inspiration in the Suite!

Painted Poppies Split Card

I playing with the Split Card technique again. Sometimes I like my results, and sometimes I don’t. Therein lies the beauty of paper-craft: paper, in general, is cheap. Don’t like it? Throw it away! The Split Cards I made with Painted Poppies were keepers:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Painted Poppies Split Card technique

Working with Stampin’ Blends allows you to get deep, intense images while still allowing you highlights and shadows. The bold colors of this card pop right off the page! I stamped the flowers with Poppy Parade ink, then used my Poppy Parade Blends to color them in. I did the same with the leaves in Mossy Meadow. Since I used the same color to stamp the image as to color it in, I didn’t have to worry if the outline ran a little.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Painted Poppies Split Card technique

This card front was a split card project so I had another side to color. I chose to go the opposite direction and use colored pencils. They are much more nuanced, and allowed me to create a much softer look:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Painted Poppies Split Card technique

The color palette is the same, but I used our Watercolor Pencils and a Blender pen to create this more subdued look. The sentiment is from Beautiful Friendship, and the trim is our new Braided Red Linen. I also slipped in a few splooshes (that is the technical term, btw) from the Forever Fern stamp set.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Painted Poppies Split Card technique

You can fluff and stretch and unravel that red trim to get a BUNCH of different looks. The natural linen is still my favorite, but this is going to be a great addition to my embellishment stash.

So tell me, what do you think? Do you like the bold, intense poppies, or do you prefer the gentler version? I want to try this again using watercolor paper and our new Water Painters. The possibilities are endless! It’s amazing I ever get anything done.

Celebrating Sunflowers – Anything but Yellow!

On Sunday I shared a sunflower card in Just Jade and apparently I’m not the only one who wants to see alternative color palettes! I experimented with a few additional combinations, but had to stop when I ran out of White Crinkled Seam Binding (that stuff is AH-MAZING.) Here are some of my favorites:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

I got a little carried away with the Stampin’ Sponges here! This is Gorgeous Grape and Highland Heather ink, and mats in Purple Posy and Highland Heather.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

I used pearls to embellish the card, and have poked out some of the circles in the center of the flower. It’s completely random, because they tend to fall out as I remove the die cut from the die, and my objective is to just even up the look.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

Although this version is similar to the original Just Jade card, it’s Misty Moonlight, Balmy Blue and Seaside Spray. The Balmy Blue ink has a bit of a turquoise hue, which you can see under the petals.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

Oh, my goodness, you NEED that White Crinkled Seam Binding! It is so soft and molds so beautifully, but it also rather magically holds its shape. I’ve embellished again with the 20-22 In Color Enamel dots.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

BOOM!

Magenta Madness here, and wow, talk about madness! There isn’t a set of tonal inks that work well for this, so I just softened my sponging as I went outward on the card. Here’s a look before I put it together:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

Because I didn’t have the range of colors, I was actually even more careful when I sponged, and I like the results. I kept the deepest tone underneath the opening in the center of the flower, allowed it to lighten in the area where the petals open out, and then barely tapped the rest of the card.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers Anything but Yellow

This is the base before I add the detailed die cut. Note there are 4 mini dimensionals placed where they won’t obscure any of my carefully selected open spots on the flower (lol). The various stems are all adhered with Tombo Multipurpose glue – even the vellum. Because there’s so much detail, you don’t notice any adhesive.

For details on the supplies, see the post from Sunday.

Celebrate Sunflowers in Just Jade

Every time I search Celebrate Sunflower images I get a sea of yellow and gold. I’ll be honest: I’ve discarded multiple versions trying to find other color options, but I think I’ve found one that’s a keeper.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers in Just Jade
Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers in Just Jade

I’ve LITERALLY just finished this card, and have taken photos in order to share this today. I’ve been crafting a lot but sharing, well, not so much. I am so pleased with this one I didn’t want to wait another minute!

I wanted more texture but with a soft focus, and sponging gave me the result I wanted. I almost kept the little leafy bits to white and vellum, but at the last minute decided to add a couple of stems in Just Jade at the very back of the leaf stack.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers in Just Jade

After determining where I would place the white sunflower die cut, I started sponging dark-to-light from the center out. I sponged across the bottom and nearly but not completely to the top, and used Pool Party ink to add a few speckles from the Forever Fern set.

All the New In Colors

My first full-catalog order arrived this afternoon and I WAS READY:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up 2020-2022 In Color Collection Painted Poppies

This card was designed, cut and ready for my 2020-2022 In Color inks and blends! It doesn’t often happen that way, but I was inspired by these gorgeous colors. I love the statement it makes when you feature a single color with black and white accents. (Note to self: Magenta Madness is VERY pink!)

Maui Stamper Stampin Up 2020-2022 In Color Collection Painted Poppies

Oh, Magenta Madness is glorious! I love this sentiment from the Peaceful Moments stamp set, because it sets the stage for just about any message – thank you, thinking of you, happy birthday, you name it. I’ll add an additional sentiment on the inside of these cards when it’s time to send them.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up 2020-2022 In Color Collection Painted Poppies

Stampin’ Up! hasn’t produced a Bumble Bee Stampin’ Blend, so I used Daffodil Delight with a little Mango Melody. You could easily use Stampin’ Write markers to color this image.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up 2020-2022 In Color Collection Painted Poppies

Any of the designs available with this DSP would work well for this technique, but I chose the dots because they echoed the repetition of the poppy blooms on the stems.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up 2020-2022 In Color Collection Painted Poppies

I wasn’t sure how Cinnamon Cider would work for this card, but I’m very happy with it! It reminds me of a vine that is quite common (actually it’s invasive) here in Hawaii called wood rose. The flower is yellow, but the seed pod looks like a soft wooden flower.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up 2020-2022 In Color Collection Painted Poppies

I don’t want to play favorites, but I *think* Just Jade is going to be my go-to In Color for this new suite of colors. It’s not as bright as Bermuda Bay and I can’t wait to explore new color combinations.

That’s today’s In Color Suite – what do you think? If you’re ready to shop, consider two specials going on for the month of June. A workshop or single order that reaches the $250 level gets an extra $25 of Host Rewards. I’m hosting events on Zoom with great success, and if you’re interested I would be delighted to talk about how we could make that work for you.

Available Today: Forever Greenery Suite

Welcome to the 2020-2021 Annual Catalog! I gasped when I first saw this suite, and it’s been on top of my craft desk since the moment it arrived in my studio. The colors and images are restful and versatile, just the thing for a respite from the summer heat.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Forever Greenery Suite

This suite has it all: stamps, dies, designer series paper, a trim collection, embossing folders (which I didn’t use here) and those gold hoops. WHO KNEW??? Every single sheet of that DSP is hoard-worthy, and I have challenged myself to use it all up!!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Forever Greenery Suite

The natural trim is so soft – it’s like the kind of gauze they made bandages from back in the day, soft and easy to shape. The gold trim has more heft than previous trims and ties beautifully as well.

I used Multipurpose Liquid Glue (aka Tombo) to adhere that hoop. It’s actually flat on the side that faces the paper, making it easier to get a secure attachment. I love those little details.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Forever Greenery Suite

Trust me, my crafty friends, this is going to sell and sell quickly! The 20-21 Annual Catalog will be available for orders some time around 8am HST today.

This Suite has everything you could wish for, but if your budget doesn’t have the space to do that, order what you can and be happy! Hurry to the Online Store to get yours today.

Cutting and Pasting: Scrappy Strip Technique

These cards have been everywhere – I’ll bet you’ve seen them too. Kylie and Bruno Bertucci in Australia popularized this technique they call #ScrappyStripTechnique and created a video to show how it’s done. It’s just as easy as they say!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Scrappy Strip Technique Paper Piercing
Maui Stamper Stampin Up Scrappy Strip Technique Paper Piercing

Once I got started, it was hard to stop! I had a desk full of strips cut every which way and spent a delightful afternoon arranging, adhering, and adding sentiments to my cards. (The sentiment and dies are from the So Sentimental Bundle.)

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Scrappy Strip Technique Paper Piercing

I think this one is my favorite. I used all neutrals with a few Bermuda Bay strips added in for contrast and no DSP. It would be a great masculine card, but I think it works for anyone. I love the way the neutrals are so, well, you know, neutral.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Scrappy Strip Technique Paper Piercing

This one is based on the Lily Impressions DSP offered as a SAB 2020 choice (and no longer available, I’m sorry!) This was one of the first cards I did and it has a decidedly chaotic feeling.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Scrappy Strip Technique Paper Piercing

The fun thing is that this is the reverses side of the above DSP. Even though some of the colors are repeated, the feeling of the design is completely different.

Honestly, I could go on and on (actually, I did!) I hope you’ll pull out some scraps and your paper trimmer and have some fun. The video gives great instructions so I’m not going too replicate the Bertucci’s fabulous effort – just cut up some paper and get started with cut and paste!

LAST CHANCE products are available WHILE SUPPLIES LAST or through June 2, 2020, whichever comes first. Don’t miss out.

If you happen to be flat out of paper (SERIOUSLY? Is that possible?) or perhaps if you’ve used the last of your Multipurpose Glue, I’d be delighted if you chose to shop HERE.

Inspired by Designer Series Paper

I love our DSP. The colors are rich, the designs are versatile, the finish of the paper is smooth, and the weight is Goldilocks perfect – not too heavy, not too light, but juuuuuust right. I’ve been challenging myself to dig into my stash (it’s a little embarrassing) and create with all of the beautiful paper I’ve found there.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Peaceful Poppies

I used a Stampin’ Sponge to lightly shade the front edge of my Whisper White card. I didn’t want the bold color of Pool Party card stock, but the WW seemed too stark. Sponging was the perfect solution as it provided a hint of color and a very simple technique.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Peaceful Poppies

That Peaceful Poppies DSP is gorgeous and completely IN YOUR FACE. The colors and images are really bold, but they’re really easy to use. I reached for this combination first when I decided to dig into my DSP stash.

The So Sentimental bundle is a versatile bundle with unique and very useful stitched shapes that layer in a multitude of ways. This one is a keeper, and it’s carrying forward into the new Annual Catalog.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Magnolia Lane
Maui Stamper Stampin Up Magnolia Lane

This same layout has a simpler construction. The DSP panels stand on their own without a complimentary mat behind them, and the Whisper White card base is left in its natural state. I struggle with simple stamping (ink, stamps, paper) but this is pretty close for me.

Are you a DSP hoarder? I confess that I am, but I have been sending a lot of cards lately, and my stash is getting a little thin. Cutting into this gorgeous paper is hard – you know, the first cut is the deepest – but the results are worth it!

A lot of our beautiful DSP is on sale in the Online Store. Hurry, supplies are limited!

Poppies 101

I’m pretty obsessed with these poppies right now:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Painted Poppies

It’s difficult to see the texture from the embossing folder because, well, it’s SUBTLE, but in person it really makes a difference. I think the Subtle EF is my favorite of our entire line because it works on any type of card. It gives you the ability to have textured card stock in any color at your fingertips, and I often reach for it to lift a simpler card up a step.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Painted Poppies

At first, I had a little trouble with the filler stamp for the poppy. I lean towards OCD (my daughter says she’s a recovering perfectionist, and that describes me too). The filler doesn’t “match” and the texture is uneven. I ended up stamping it twice over the Memento Black outline, rotating the filler stamp a quarter turn for the second impression. That gave me a little more coverage and depth, and I was happy with the result.

If you haven’t ordered the Painted Poppies bundle yet, you need to know that the Painted Labels dies are currently on backorder. The Peaceful Moments bundle is in Low Inventory status, meaning it is approaching backorder. Once the backorders reach a pre-determined level, Stampin’ Up! will make the product unavailable until the backorders are received in the warehouse. It helps manage costs and expectations, but if you like this set, save yourself some disappointment and get in line HERE.
