DIY AUGUST 2024: SPOTLIGHT ON NATURE

I’m late to the Spotlight on Nature party, but I think my first effort makes up for my tardiness. The floral image is a teeny tiny bit too big for my calendar, but I persevered because it’s really all about the butterfly. Tell me what you think:

Stamps: Spotlight on Nature
Color Palette: Basic White, Granny Apple Green, Lemon Lime Twist, Daffodil Delight, Peach Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Cajun Craze, Memento Black
Accessories: Stampin’ Blends, Paper Snips, Wink of Stella, Multi-purpose glue, Stampin’ Dimensionals

The images are all colored with Stampin’ Blends – I like to finish them up by taking the lightest blend and using the brush end to smooth over the entire image. The butterfly got a little Wink of Stella to add sparkle (you can see it better below) and I cut a second wing with my snips to add dimension to the butterfly.

That second wing has a body just like the one stamped directly on the calendar. I used a little multi-purpose glue to adhere the two bodies and tucked a couple of narrow pieces of dimensional behind the body on the back of the wing to make sure it stood up from the calendar.

UNDER THE MOON

Sometimes a simple card is all you need. The focal image on my Under the Moon card is a single layer with just a few embellishments. It’s matted onto a dry embossed card base, and the entire project is complete in 15 minutes or less. Does that work for you?

Stamps: Under the Moon
Color Palette: Basic White, Misty Moonlight, Coastal Cabana, Pool Party, Daffodil Deight
Accessories: Stamp Cut and Emboss Machine, So Swirly 3D Embossing Folder, Adhesive Backed Shiny Sequins, Dauber, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I stamped the “ocean” part 3 times – upside down, left and right – and added another layer on the inside of the card to carry the theme forward. Be sure to use a Stampin’ Pierce Mat or the Glass Mat Studio (now available!) with these photopolymer/distINKtive stamps for the best results. I tapped in the “sun” using a dauber and some Daffodil Delight ink.

LAYERS OF BEAUTY, SHADES OF PURPLE

Creating a card with masks is such a satisfying project. The Layers of Beauty bundle includes a set of 5 masks that will make you feel oh-so-talented. This version is in shades of purple:

Color Palette: Basic White, Fresh Freesia, Highland Heather, Gorgeous Grape, Old Olive, Mossy Meadow, Memento Black
Accessories: Stamp Cut and Emboss Machine, Layers of Beauty dies and masks, Deckle Rectangle dies, Something Fancy dies, Blending Brushes, paint brush, Ink Refill, Purple Fine Shimmer Gems,Iridescent Striped Trim, Stampin’ Dimensionals, washi tape (pattern doesn’t matter, it’s for securing the mask)

Don’t be put off by that list of supplies! Once you have everything out, this is a very relaxing and enjoyable process. Stamp a stack of that big, beautiful floral and get busy – you’ll love creating new color combinations!

Pro tip: Use a light hand with the blending brush, especially with Old Olive and Highland Heather. I used Highland Heather with masks #2 and 3, but kept it verrrrry light on #2 and was more generous on mask #3. I also added a bit of Gorgeous Grape on mask #3 in the center of the flowers. There’s no rule that says only one color per mask!

I’ve tried all the techniques for splatters, and paint-brush-with-diluted-ink is my favorite. I can control the intensity of the color by changing the ink to water ratio. I also like having control over number and size of the splatters based on how much water I load onto the brush. “Control” is a loose word here: be certain your craft desk is free of anything you don’t want splattered before you start! IYKYK.
