Last Chance for Butterfly Brilliance Bundle

All the savvy Stampin’ Up! crafters know that bundles are one of our best ways to save. A number of bundles from the 21-22 Annual Catalog are retiring, but their components will continue to be in the catalog. What does this mean? It means you have just a short time to save 10% by purchasing the bundle before it is no longer available.

Butterfly Brilliance is a perfect bundle for getting a lot done in a single turn of the Stamp Cut and Emboss machine. The stamp is a large format, and the images fit into a single die yielding 6 butterflies with one crank! I tried the butterflies with both Stampin’ Blends and Watercolor Pencils, and was surprised how much I preferred the pencils.

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Butterfly Brilliance Watercolor Pencils Dragonfly Garden
  • Stamps: Butterfly Brilliance, Dragonfly Garden, retired sentiment
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Sahara Sand, Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, Granny Apple Green, Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Brilliant Wings dies, Blending Brush, Watercolor Pencils (sets 1 and 2), 21-23 In Color Jewels, Stampin’ Dimensionals

The image is stamped in Sahara Sand. I found the pencils easier to use on this detailed image, and I liked having the ability to shade even in a very small space. By layering colors I could create transitions, and I had a great time choosing colors for this never-found-in-real life butterfly.

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Butterfly Brilliance Watercolor Pencils Dragonfly Garden

To keep the focus on the butterfly, I used a Basic White panel on a Basic White card base. The panel is popped up on dimensionals, as is the butterfly.

This is the version with the Stampin’ Blends. Do you see the difference? What do you think?

I’ll tell you what I think. Blends or pencils, you need this bundle before the chance to save is gone!

Hand-Penned Petals for the One I Love

I have one last Valentine, a love letter, if you will. I’ve used a combination of products, but the foundation is the Hand-Penned Petals bundle. You won’t find colors like these in nature, but that’s irrelevant: reinventing what you see is what creativity is all about.

MauiStamper Stampin' Up! #BasicMasks #DIY #Handmadecard #OneILove #Valentines #HandPenned
  • Stamps: Hand-Penned Petals, Love & Happiness
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Crumb Cake, Basic Black, Pool Party, Soft Succulent, Just Jade
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Penned Flowers dies, Layering Circles dies, Basic Patterns Decorative Masks, Blending Brushes, Vellum Card Stock, Linen Thread, Stampin’ Dimensionals

The Basic Patterns Decorative Masks have sat neglected on my craft desk for an embarrassing amount of time. I’ve left them out, in the way and looking as though they ought to be picked up and put away, just to be sure I use them more. I LIKE them. They’re SIMPLE to use. They add a 💥 to any project.

MauiStamper Stampin' Up! #BasicMasks #DIY #Handmadecard #OneILove #Valentines #HandPenned

One of the reasons I love Hand-Penned Petals so much is (wait for it, you know it’s coming) I love to color. These flowers have enough detail to inspire me to try something different each time, but not so much as to be exhausting. Yeah, I know you’re not supposed to have brown leaves, that’s kind of a bad thing in the real, garden world. But don’t you think it works here?

MauiStamper Stampin' Up! #BasicMasks #DIY #Handmadecard #OneILove #Valentines #HandPenned

I added a little more stenciling with the mask on the inside of the card. Detailing the inside of the card and the envelope are little extras that help to focus the hand-made nature of a hand-made card. It’s another way of saying “I love you.”

MauiStamper Stampin' Up! #BasicMasks #DIY #Handmadecard #OneILove #Valentines #HandPenned

You don’t need a special occasion to send this card, or any other card. Write a few lines inside – copy a couple of lines of poetry or steal something from social media. You don’t need to be all Shakespearean about it, and it doesn’t have to be perfect to be very, very good.

If you’ve never tried our masks, today is a great day – and with just a couple of days left to take advantage of Sale-a-bration, if you hurry, you’ll get something wonderful for free! Shop HERE.

One of a Kind Brushed Rainbow

The Brilliant Rainbow dies keep inspiring me with new ideas! I had a big stack of leftover “negatives” and realized they made perfect templates for brushing beautiful, soft rainbows. This is a very quick card!

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Brilliant Rainbow Slim Sayings #DIY #handmadecard #stampinupdemo #makeacardsendacard
  • Stamps: Slim Sayings
  • Color Palette: Fresh Freesia, Blushing Bride, Coastal Cabana, Daffodil Delight, Gorgeous Grape, Basic White
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Brilliant Rainbow Dies, Blending Brushes, 2021-2023 In Color 6×6 DSP, Multipurpose Glue, Note cards and envelopes

I used washi tape to hold my note card in place, then layered the die cut negative over the note card and secured it with a little more washi. Brushing the arcs is easy – choosing the colors is harder! I could do this over and over again with different results each time. The template is good for a number of uses, especially since the Blending Brush doesn’t make it soggy.

I love this sentiment from the new Slim Sayings stamp set! It’s perfect for any occasion, and in my opinion, it’s right up there with Mr. Rogers’ “I like you just the way you are.” And can’t we all use a little more of that right now?

November 2021: Create with Friends

For my November DIY Easel calendar, I used a Blending Brush technique to create a background, then featured a sentiment from Create with Friends. What do you think?

Maui Stamper Stampin Up DIY Easel Calendar November 2021 Create with Friends
  • Stamps: Create with Friends
  • Color Palette: Daffodil Delight, Mango Melody, Pumpkin Pie, Pale Papaya, Flirty Flamingo, Calypso Coral, Merry Merlot
  • Accessories: Blending Brushes

I began by masking across the top of the calendar portion. I found the center of the space above the masked line where I wanted to create my sunburst and used it as a pivot point.

I used a fresh piece of card stock as a mask and began by placing it diagonally through that pivot point, using the upper corners and the edge of my mask for alignment. I loaded up my blending brushes with Flirty Flamingo and starting blending! Once I was satisfied with the color intensity, I moved my card stock mask to the center of the calendar (again using that pivot point) and loaded another Blending Brush with Daffodil Delight. I have a few sets of brushes so that I can dedicate some to color like Daffodil Delight that don’t like to share.

Once I had the vertical and diagonal lines established, I moved my straight card stock mask around rather randomly, filling in the color as I liked. I enjoyed NOT measuring or calculating or planning ahead: most often I work that way, but I really enjoyed this spontaneous process. Maybe another time I’ll plot it out. Or not.

The final step was to add the sentiment in Merry Merlot to coordinate with the card stock mat I chose for November.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up DIY Easel Calendar November 2021 Create with Friends

I confess I was a little nervous as I removed the mask across the bottom, but it must have been my lucky day and it came off perfectly. This is an easy technique that is adaptable to a variety of uses, and I’d love to hear what you think of it.

September 2021 DIY: Hand-Penned Petals

Don’t put any money on this yet, but I think Hand Penned Petals may be my favorite set from the 21-22 Annual Catalog. I love the images, and what’s more, they are REALLY fun to color with Stampin’ Blends.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up September 2021 DIY Easel Calendar Hand Penned Petals
  • Stamps: Hand Penned Petals
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Daffodil Delight, Calypso Coral, Shaded Spruce, Black
  • Accessories: Stampin’ Blends, Big Boss, Penned Flowers dies, Stampin’ Dimensionals, Multi-Purpose Glue, Paper Snips, Blending Brushes

Because this image doesn’t quite fill the space, I was looking for something subtle to add behind it. I tried various leaves and backgrounds, but even when I used a very light hand it felt like too much. The moment I realized this was a perfect job for Blending Brushes, I knew I’d found what I needed.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up September 2021 DIY Easel Calendar Hand Penned Petals

I did a bit of fussy cutting and layered the flowers and leaves. It’s absolutely not necessary as this image stands on its own very well, but I was in a moooood.

Friends Are Like Seashells: June 2021 DIY

When I realized I had yet to create a seashells calendar I had a moment of disbelief: how had I neglected that? Never fear, the situation is remedied. And June is a lovely month to think of seashells and sandy shores and all things beachy:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Friends Are Like Seashells DIY Calendar June 2021
Friends A
  • Stamps: Friends Are Like Seashells
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Petal Pink, Soft Succulent, Crumb Cake
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Seashells dies, Blending Brushes, Stampin Dimensionals, Wink of Stella, Silver and Clear Epoxy Essentials, Water Painter

I was inspired by a very talented Aussie demonstrator named Narelle Farrugia. She’s on the Artisan Design Team for Stampin’ Up!, and when you see her work it’s clear why she earned that opportunity. Check out her work – I’m sure she’ll inspire you!

I used Petal Pink and the Blending Brushes to create a soft, tropical background, and used the Brushes on some of those die cut images as well to soften them. Color is a never-ending experiment for me, which is one of the reasons I love stamping so much. I don’t have to draw – and I’ve never been happy with the results when I do – so stamping allows me to focus on the parts that I like. These die cut images are layered with dimensionals and multi-purpose glue to create a little dimension on this tiny canvas.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Friends Are Like Seashells DIY Calendar June 2021

I’m looking forward to seeing these seashells each day in my crafting space. I’m in the midst of a re-organization, and that’s messy work. These soothing colors and reminders of the beach will help me keep my focus.

….annnnd a little dose of Vitamin Sea from a sweaty but very happy Maui Stamper!! Mr. Maui Stamper and I have a tandem bike and take it out most Sundays for a spin. This past Sunday was especially gorgeous, even by Maui standards!

Sand and Sea Suite: Unconstructed

When you combine the Seashells Embossing Folder from the Sand and Sea suite with the all-in-one die, you get a stunning panel that works all by itself. But when you cut apart all the elements, the combinations are endless:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Sand and Sea Suite Friends Are Like Seashells
  • Stamps: Friends Are Like Seashells, Itty Bitty Greetings
  • Color Palette: Whisper White, Sahara Sand, Petal Pink
  • Accessories: Stamp Cut and Emboss (Big Boss), Seashell Embossing Folder, Subtle Embossing Folder, Seaside Seashells dies, Ornate Frames dies, Shimmery White paper, Linen Thread, Opal Rounds, Stampin Dimensionals, Blending Brush, Paper Snips

You really need Paper Snips for this task, because they are super sharp and their pointy little tips get right into the littlest spots! The other indispensable tool I used is the Blending Brush, which layers color consistently and smoothly. I KNOW they’re not available to order right now 😟 but they are due in the warehouse the week of April 5!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Sand and Sea Suite Friends Are Like Seashells handmade card

Did you notice the Opal Rounds in the January-June Mini Catalog? I completely missed them until just a few weeks ago, but I’m doing my best to make up for that now! They’re perfect with the Shimmery White card stock (or any other project you might be working on.) And I think it is a universal truth that there is no substitute for Linen Thread.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Sand and Sea Suite Friends Are Like Seashells handmade card

The Friends Are Like Seashells stamps include the images on the Embossing Folder, but also include a great assortment of other images that really round out the suite. I used a little bit of ocean flora on the inside of my card – because it’s there, just waiting for some ink!

The Retiring List for the 2020-2021 Annual Catalog comes out today (March 24) at 1pm MST. Every year, there’s a lot of excitement swirling around what will stay and what will go, and I confess that I get a little nervous when I think about some of my favorites! This year the calendar is a little different, so pay close attention: The 2020-2021 Annual Catalog is available (while supplies last once the list has been published) until May 3, 2020. The new 2021-2022 Annual Catalog will debut on May 4th!

The January-June Mini Catalog remains current until June 30 (again, there’s that pesky “while supplies last” clause). If you’re making a plan, be sure to make note of those two dates!

One more Snail-y Mojo (Monday)

When I first saw the Mojo Monday 552 sketch, I envisioned it in Designer Series Paper. Once I started working, I switched to textured paper, but the idea of using DSP was still in my head. I finally got it out of my head and onto a card:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It MojoMonday552 Dandy Garden
  • Stamps: Snailed It, Lots of Heart, The Right Angle
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Memento Black, Calypso Coral, Mossy Meadow, Bumblebee
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Snail dies, Stitched Shapes dies, Painted Texture 3D Embossing Folder, Blending Brushes, Bumblebee Gingham Ribbon, Wink of Stella, Fine Tip Glue Pen, Stampin’ Dimensionals

The card sketch is the same – I followed the dimensions in the challenge – but this is the original layout. My first card made for this challenge was a mirror image of the design, since that snail was traveling East. This snail is Westward Ho!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It MojoMonday552 Dandy Garden

I’m totally sold on using Wink of Stella and the Fine Tip Glue pen to make eyes – any eyes – really sparkle. I don’t use the fine tip, I unscrew the entire top of the bottle and dip right in with a bamboo skewer. You need to let the excess drip back into the bottle, but I find it gives me better control when I want to “paint” with the glue.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It MojoMonday552 Dandy Garden

The horizontal row of hearts in Lots of Heart is perfectly sized for adding to the envelope or the inside of the card – or both! Why be either/or when you can be both/and?? Ask yourself this more often.

Take that idea of Both/And with you to the Online Store and you too can be overrun with cute little paper snails! They’re highly preferable to the slimy kind, at least if you ask me. You may discuss amongst yourselves.

Snailed it for Mojo Monday 552

I haven’t joined in for a challenge in ages. Mojo Monday popped up in my social media and I liked the layout and thought “why not?” Why not indeed? This was a great chance to celebrate the Snailed It snails!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It Ombre DSP MojoMonday552
  • Stamps: Snailed It, Itty Bitty Greetings, The Right Triangle, Stacked Stone
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Bermuda Bay, Granny Apple Green, Coastal Cabana, Pool Party
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Snailed dies, Stitched Shapes dies, Textured Textiles Embossing Folder, Greenery Embossing Folder, Ombré DSP (Sale-a-bration 2021.1), Blending Brushes, Stampin Blends, Wink of Stella, Fine Tip Glue Pen, Stampin’ Dimensionals, tiny clear dots from a long-past Paper Pumpkin
Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It Ombre DSP MojoMonday552

This card was all about texture. With all those layers, it required something too distinguish them! I used embossing folders, background stamps, sparkle and shine, dimensionals, and Designer Series Papers to create dimension on this project. The sentiment tab and the narrowest patterned paper were gently brushed with Blending Brushes and Pool Party ink to give them very soft color.

If you’ve missed The Right Triangle, check out all of the textures you can find in that stamp set!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It Ombre DSP MojoMonday552

I repeated my sparkly eyes trick, using Wink of Stella and the Fine Tip Glue pen to bring her eyes to life. I also did a little spattering with Stella on the Oh So Ombre DSP, and added some “dits” with a textural stamp from Right Triangle.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It Ombre DSP MojoMonday552

The sketch challenge really inspired me. I’d felt like I was in a rut, that everything I created had an element of sameness to me. Maybe it did, and maybe it didn’t, but working with a sketch helped me see paper and layers with fresh eyes, and I feel like my creative energy stores have been replenished.

If you’re ready to shop the January – June mini catalog and get in on the great deals available during Sale-a-bration, visit my Online Store! If you’d like to see more about Mojo Monday, take a look at what Julee is doing at Poetic Artistry. And thanks for stopping by!

Back to that Darling Donkey

Stampin’ Up! has set me up! What is with snails and donkeys? I didn’t anticipate falling for such off-my-radar critters, but here I am. After I finished the January DIY calendar, I was on a Donkey Bender – but I didn’t really want to cut him out. I mean, I’ll fussy cut with the best of them, but enough is enough.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Darling Donkey Oh So Ombre DSP
  • Stamps: Darling Donkeys
  • Color Palette: Whisper White, Bermuda Bay, Gray Granite, Daffodil Delight, Petal Pink
  • Accessories: Stampin Cut and Emboss (BIG BOSS), Layering Ovals dies, Ornate Frames dies, Stampin Blends, Blending Brushes, Stampin Dimensionals, Oh So Ombré Designer Series Paper (SAB 2021.1)

I’ve based this card on a design by Mary Knabe of Stampin’ Peace. I loved her concept and color palette, and reinterpreted them for this card. One of the delights of this design is that by using an opening on the front of the card, the image can be expanded when you open it:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Darling Donkey Oh So Ombre DSP

The Blending Brushes are VERY easy to use, and in this case I didn’t even bother to mask off the donkey before I created that Daffodil Delight aura. (You know donkeys have auras, right??) I also added an additional message in the corner that isn’t visible from the front of the card. (I am quite proud of myself, as I normally struggle to use images AND sentiments from the same set, and on this one I have used 3 of the 4 sentiments!)

But wait, there’s more!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Darling Donkey Oh So Ombre DSP

You could call this technique a card within a card. The card base is 11″ x 8 1/2″, scored at 5 1/2″. The white card inside is 10″ x 3 3/4″, scored at 5″, so it fits well within the first card. The bottom panel is completed adhered to the card base, much as a layer would be. That leaves a front for artwork to peep through the window, and an interior page for your message – or more artwork!

As you can see, I accidentally inked up this kick-up-your-heels donkey in Bermuda Bay instead of Memento Black, and had to be extra careful to avoid pulling in the Bermuda Bay ink when I colored with my Blends.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Darling Donkey Oh So Ombre DSP

I prepared quite a few of these for a virtual stamping event, and I wanted to be sure I had the ovals in the center every time. To simplify that task, I made templates to use with the BIG BOSS:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Darling Donkey Oh So Ombre DSP

There’s a little math involved, so bear with me. I began by measuring the height and width of each die, then subtracting that number from the height and width of the card panel. For example, the plain oval is 2 1/4″ wide, and the card front is 4 1/4″ wide, so the difference is 2 inches. I divided that number by 2 and measured in that amount from each edge, drawing a line at 1 inch. That gives me the left-to-right guideline for placing my die.

I went through the same process with the height of each die, creating two panels that had a rectangle in the center of each one. I centered the appropriate die in each panel (note that I wrote which panel was which on the template, I am famous for mixing up things like this!) When I ran the centered die through my BIG BOSS I created a template that I could use repeatedly without having to mark each piece of paper.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Darling Donkey Oh So Ombre DSP

Just place the template squarely on top of your card or panel, drop the die into the pre-cut opening, and crank ‘er through! When you have a bunch of cutting to do, this is a real time saver.

Have some fun with your own Darling Donkeys, or any other spotlight image for that matter! Darling Donkeys and the Oh So Ombré are only available in January and February 2021 as Sale-a-bration selections. Don’t miss out! Shop HERE.
