A first look at Sale-a-bration

Lisa’s on the Mainland (crazy girl – it’s snowing there!) and she let me play with some of her Sale-a-bration sets:

Sale-a-bration Sweet Summer

  • Sweet Summer and So Happy for You stamp sets (SAB)
  • Pear Pizazz, Marina Mist, Regal Rose and Whisper White card stock
  • Pear Pizazz, Marina Mist and Regal Rose Classic ink pads
  • Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Write marker; Aquapainter
  • Scallop Trim border punch
  • Paper piercing tool and Mat
  • Brights Designer Buttons; Linen Thread (yay!)

First, let me say that I have promised myself never-never-ever to run out of Linen Thread again!

Now, I have to confess that when I saw Sweet Summer I thought it was cute but I didn’t think I’d be all wonky-crazy about it.  Think again!  I love these flowers, and not to be big-headed or anything but I think they love me too.  That long “wheel-y” looking panel was just randomly stamped, but I think it’s very effective.  And yes, I may be  starting to sound like Jan Tink and “Yes I Love Myself (YILM)”, except that I will never be so audacious as to compare myself to Jan Tink.

Sale-a-bration starts January 25th and my calendar is filling up.  Do you have your event scheduled yet?

Twice as nice

Last night I couldn’t make a decision.  This isn’t news, by the way – I often have a hard time making decisions (Vanilla Swiss Almond or Deep Dark Chocolate??  Oatmeal Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter Fudge??)  Last night’s choice, however, had nothing to do with food and everything to do with color.

The Color Dare Challenge this week was Regal Rose, Tempting Turquoise, Certainly Celery and Whisper White – a combination I would choose myself, so an easy one for me to work with.    My problem was proportions.  When I start a color challenge, the first thing I like to do is determine which color will be the dominant color – usually the card base – and which colors will be secondary.  I’m a blues-and-greens girl myself, so I knew Regal Rose would be an accent color, but I couldn’t decide which color to choose for my card base.

Birthday Gifts in Tempting Turquoise

What do you think?  Does it work in Tempting Turquoise?

Birthday Gifts in Certainly Celery

Or is it better in Certainly Celery?

  • Happy Moments, Crazy for Cupcakes, Itty Bitty Backgrounds and You & Moi stamp sets
  • Certainly Celery, Regal Rose, Tempting Turquoise and Whisper White card stock
  • Patterns II Designer Series Paper (retired)
  • Basic Black, Tempting Turquoise and Certainly Celery Classic ink pads
  • Ruby Red and Tempting Turquoise Stampin’ Write markers
  • Scallop Trim, Corner Rounder, Photo Corner and Modern Label punches
  • Piercing tool and mat, Fresh Favorites II Buttons, Stampin’ Sponges and Linen Thread

I still don’t know which one I prefer.

And if that sketch looks familiar, yes, it’s the Mojo Monday sketch for this week.  For some reason I’m fighting the circle thing.  Call it rebellion.  More likely I just need some Deep Dark Chocolate and everything will be fine.

Never enough birthday cards

Have you checked out the Stampin’ Addicts web site?  It’s a wonderful FREE resource for anyone who likes stamping, especially Stampin’ Up! stamping!  There are discussion forums, inspiration galleries, all sorts of weekly challenges, and a very positive attitude that will lift your spirits every time you log in.  Check it out!  They’re celebrating their first birthday.

It’s a good thing to need birthday cards – it means there are wonderful people in your life that you want to acknowledge.  I just wish I could get my act together sufficiently to send birthday cards on time.  Ah well.  As Popeye says, “I yam what I yam.”  And I “yam” sure there will always be room for improvement.

  • Upsy Daisy and Vintage Labels (SAB) stamp sets
  • Chocolate Chip and Bermuda Bay Classic ink pads
  • Very Vanilla, Chocolate Chip, So Saffron and Bermuda Bay card stock
  • Scallop Circle and 1″ Circle Punch
  • Champagne Mist shimmer paint, piercing tool, needle and Linen Thread

You don’t see the shimmer paint in the photo, but it’s there on the image panel, trust me.  Love that stuff.  It’s done wonders for my marriage, too — now, don’t go getting ideas — my husband HATES glitter.  Shimmer paint is the Anti-Glitter that keeps us both happy!  No more glitter in the furniture finish, correspondence or laundry!

Love You Much

In my humble opinion, the Medallion stamp is one of the best values in the Stampin’ Up! catalog.  It can be a background or a focal point, it can be a single image or multiple layers, and it works in any color you can imagine.  Not only that, but it is really fun to dress up – kind of a Stamper’s Barbie doll.

Love You Medallion

  • Medallion, Well Scripted and Vintage Labels (SAB) stamp sets
  • Bashful Blue, Tempting Turquoise and Whisper White card stock
  • Bashful Blue and Tempting Turquoise Classic Ink pads
  • 3/4″ and Scallop Circle punches, Bashful Blue Satin ribbon, and Pretties kit
  • Stampin’ Sponge and brayer

I inked the Medallion stamp with Bashful Blue ink using a brayer.  Larger stamps with anything bolder than line art really need to be inked with the brayer to get even converage.

(I place the stamp rubber-side-up and roll the brayer on the ink pad and then on the stamp, repeating until I’m sure my coverage is complete.  I carefully position the cardstock on the inked rubber and put a large piece of scrap paper on top.  You need a steady hand to keep from moving that cardstock!  I use a separate brayer to run across the scrap paper, transferring the ink to my cardstock.  You can use the same brayer if you like, but I like to use a clean one when I’m creating multiple images because it doesn’t waste the ink.)

Back to this image – once I applied the Bashful Blue ink with the brayer, I used a Stampin’ Sponge to add Tempting Turquoise ink all the way around the outside of the Medallion.  I used a heavy hand since there isn’t a huge contrast between the two colors.  When I had both colors applied, I put the cardstock onto the stamp, layered the scratch paper on and used the brayer across the top.

The Vintage Labels image is stamped with Tempting Turquoise on Whisper White and punched with the Scallop Circle.  The last layer is the center of the Medallion inked with Bashful Blue, stamped on Bashful Blue cardstock and cut out with the 3/4″ circle.  A half pearl from the Pretties Kit is the finishing touch.

I think this is sort of a Wedding Barbie kind of Medallion.  One of these days I’m going to sit down and make this same card in a variety of color schemes.  The possibilities are endless.

Layers are a girl’s best friend

Well, maybe layers aren’t my BFF, but I know they’re a big part of my style.  The more the merrier, and I really have to hold myself back sometimes.  I could have easily added two or three more layers to this card, but I held the urge in check.  I’m very proud that I could be so self-disciplined.

A Bouquet of Happy Moments

  • Happy Moments (Sale-a-bration) stamp set
  • Whisper White, Almost Amethyst, Certainly Celery and Barely Banana card stock
  • Almost Amethyst, Certainly Celery, Old Olive, Melon Mambo and Barely Banana Classic ink pads
  • Scallop trim border punch, piercing tool and template, and Stampin’ Dimensionals
  • Elementary Ribbon originals, hand-held rectangle punch (retired) and Aquapainter
  • Big Shot with Perfect Details texture plate and Perfect Polka Dots impressions folder

I stamped the little focal image for this card the same time I stamped the image for yesterday’s card.  I wanted to use that open Scallop Trim punch to complement the feminine aspect of the flowers, so a straight color block wouldn’t work.  These mats are larger and more of a design element than an accent.

Take a closer look at the long white accent panel.  I stamped the same little floral image in Barely Banana since I wanted some subtle color and texture, but the Banana color didn’t stand out enough.  I stamped right over the Banana images with Certainly Celery ink – and it was easy with the Clear Mount stamps on their beautiful crystal-clear blocks – and then used the Aquapainter to smudge a little more Barely Banana color around the images.   It looks tied together without being too same-same, if you know what I mean.  Sometimes you get the best results when you don’t have the “perfect” solution for a problem and are forced to improvise and innovate.

Sharing Happy Moments

When I first saw the Sale-a-bration mini catalog, I looked at the Happy Moments set and thought “Cute, but not me”.   After getting my hands on it, I’ve changed my mind.

Color Block Happy Moments

  • Happy Moments and Itty Bitty Backgrounds stamp sets
  • Very Vanilla, Old Olive, Not Quite Navy and Barely Banana card stock
  • Old Olive, Not Quite Navy and Summer Sun Classic ink pads
  • Very Vanilla Craft ink pad
  • Aquapainter and Old Olive Wide Striped grosgrain ribbon

I’ve seen a lot of cards lately using color block sketches.  Color block is a perfect layout for a smaller image – it gives plenty of pop without distracting your eye from the image.  The line art in these images is perfect for watercoloring with the aquapainter.  The rough edges mean you don’t have to color perfectly inside the lines, either!

Hello Neighbor! SASC37

What a cheery neighborhood this must be!  This new set from Sale-a-bration lends itself to so many concepts.  I’ve seen row houses and suburban neighborhoods, as well as  country estates surrounded by orchards.  I wanted to play with the Stampin’ Addicts sketch challenge, so I kept the image small.

Good Neighbors stamps with Welcome Neighbors paper

  • Good Neighbors (SAB) and Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp sets
  • Whisper White, Pumpkin Pie, Bermuda Bay, Old Olive and Crushed Curry card stock
  • Welcome Neighbor Designer Series Paper Pad (SAB)
  • Pumpkin Pie, Bermuda Bay and Old Olive Classic stamp pads
  • Aquapainter, Old Olive and Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Markers and a blender pen
  • Stamp-a-ma-jig, Linen Twine, paper Snips and Stampin’ Dimensionals

The colors in the Welcome Neighbor stamp pad are bright and cheerful but they coordinate well.  I love the 6″ square size for use in cardmaking – it keeps the proportions right.  And the Stampin’ Addicts challenge was a great one, though it took a while to get the dimensions just right!  If I have time I’ll post them later.  I’m off to the beach with my son and my middle daughter – she leaves tonight to go back to Boston where they are reporting a “severe weather watch”.   She loves the excitement of the city, the stimulation of university life, and the companionship of her friends.  The weather, well, she’s not so thrilled with that, but it’s part of the deal.

I’m missing her already.

CASE-ing the morning away

Kellie came over this morning to stamp.  We spent the first 15 minutes stalking the Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator Web site, trying to figure out if our shipments were going to make it to Maui today.  The delivery confirmation looked promising, but I’ve been disillusioned by these things before so I remained skeptical.  Kellie, though, is an optimist, and kept checking her cell phone all morning to see if her husband had taken delivery of her order.  Shortly after she left she called to say her package had arrived, and within an hour or so, my package arrived too.

We’d started this card but needed something that came in my box to finish it:

Medallion andVintage Labels

  • Medallion and Vintage Labels (Sale-a-bration) stamp sets
  • Sage Shadow, Soft Suede, and Naturals White card stock; White Vellum card stock
  • Sage Shadow, Soft Suede, and Pretty in Pink Classic ink pads
  • Scallop Circle punch, 1″ circle punch, and hand-held circle punch
  • Paper snips,  Vintage brads, and Tombo multipurpose adhesive

We CASE-d this card (Copy And Share with Everyone, or alternatively, Copy And Share Everything)  from the January Stampin’ Success magazine, a publication sent monthly to Stampin’ Up! demonstrators for training and inspiration.  We changed the color scheme but little else.  I could see this card in a lot of other color combinations.

We had a great morning, and you’ll see more of our projects over the next few days.  Kellie brought something she’d made for me to see, and you’re going to LOVE it – I can’t wait to CASE it myself.

Stampin’ Up! has made the Sale-a-bration and Occasions Mini catalogs available online a few days early to make sure everyone has a couple of days to work on a wish list.  I’ve already placed a demonstrator pre-order but there are plenty of items still on my list from these two great offerings.  Be sure to click on the links to see what all the excitement is about!

The products in these catalogs will be available for order through Anne’s Online Store or directly through me on January 5, 2010.
