This takes the cake

7/24/10   ETA:  The artist is Elizabeth Price from San Jose, CA.  Well done, Elizabeth!

It’s late here in Salt Lake and although I’ve had a fabulous time I need some sleep,  I’ve downloaded some of the photos from my point-and-shoot.  They won’t win any Fabulous Photographer prizes but they’re better than the phone pix.  The lighting in the Convention Center isn’t exactly flattering.

I’m only sharing one now, but it knocked my socks off.  This cake is made entirely from paper.  I am horrified to say that every photo I took of it cut off the name of the incredibly talented woman who made it, and I will go back tomorrow to get the information to share with you.  In the meantime, feast your eyes:

An incredible paper confection

Jewel bird

I love these deep, rich colors – Elegant Eggplant, Rich Razzleberry, Melon Mambo – colors to dream in.  This last swap was the most fun just because the largest Simply Adorned charm holds a 1 1/2″ x 2″ insert so there’s more room to work.  I love all the new floral stamps we have in the 2010-2011 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and Catalog, and I’m especially fond of that hummingbird.  It made me really happy to bring them all together in one creation:

Large Simply Adorned Charm

This is the style I really enjoy.  I’m not sure what to call it, but I like all of the layers and the jewel tones.  It almost became a contest with myself to see how many different stamp sets I could incorporate!  If you really want to know what I used, leave a comment.  I’ll do my best to update these after I get home, but it could be a little while.

Sparkling Simply Adorned

These inserts are for the 1″ x 1 1/4″ Simply Adorned charms.   I designed these straight from a card I found in the catalog and cased here on this blog.   They should really have rhinestone gems on each of the flowers, but I used up most of the small ones on another swap and had to stretch out the ones I had!  I can’t wait to see the swaps I get in return for these – that’s really the fun of participating.  (And here you thought I loved pulling out my hair until all hours of the night finishing these things.)

Sweet Stem Simply Adorned

The flowers are punched with our new Bitty Punches and sprayed with Smooch Spritz – and I challenge you to say that five times as quickly as you can!  You get a beautiful shine on something small with the Spritz.  I’m pretty sure it’s not intended for skin, but it’s awfully tempting.  (I’m sure that statement should be accompanied by all sorts of legal caveats and “DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME” kinds of statements.  So don’t try it, ok??)

One Square Inch

I can start to show you some swaps now, because I’ve started swappin’ them.  Oh yeah, I love the auto-post feature!  Not a lot of info here, just some fun stuff to see.  I’ll have more details for you next week (that is, if I don’t end up being selected for the Jury Pool.  That would be a fine welcome home from convention!)

1" x 1" Simply Adorned Insert

These are inserts for the 1″ x 1″ Simply Adorned charms.  They are so much fun – since they’re small, you can spend a little more time coloring stamps and cutting things out.   I love that kind of detail and it’s easy to do in such a tiny format.  The butterfly image is meant to be worn on the back side of the charm but you could wear them either way.  I just love that goofy owl!

Embossing Boxes

You won’t believe how simple this is.  The WOW factor is huge – at least I think so!

  • I {Heart} Hearts, Teeny Tiny Wishes, You and Moi stamp sets
  • Bashful Blue, Pumpkin Pie, Certainly Celery and Whisper White card stock
  • Bashful Blue and Certainly Celery Classic ink pads
  • Bashful Blue, Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie striped grosgrain ribbon
  • Medium Jewelry Tag punch
  • Big Shot, Matchbox die and Vintage Wallpaper Textured Embossing Folder

Check out that ribbon!  It won’t be available much longer – and for sure it won’t be available after June 30 – so if you like it, order it now!  That Embossing Folder is a 2010-2011 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and catalog Sneak Peak and it is very, very cool.  Every embossing folder that comes along is more awesome than the last one and this Vintage Wallpaper is no exception.

These little boxes are perfect favors – you almost don’t need the ribbon.  The depth of the embossing folder is enough embellishment, so these would go together very quickly.  I’ve only embossed the band that wraps around the box base.  A few quick tips:

  • crease the fold lines heavily BEFORE embossing
  • insert the band with the wider of the two end pieces in first
  • apply adhesive to the narrower end which remains outside the embossing folder

The box base doesn’t need any adhesive, and the white panel is cut to fit inside.  You could cut all these pieces and then have an assembly line to make a lot of little favors in a very short time.

Using up the Stash Part II

Are you ready to see the last few clipboards?  Ready or not, here they come:

Clipboards 4

Sweet Pea DSP pack and that fabulous paper that I hoarded…with Kiwi Kiss and Riding Hood Red…you remember!

Clipboards 5

These are oldies but goodies…I think the front one might be Urban Garden and the back one…well it had River Rock in it and it was all these glorious baroque designs and I really loved it and…

You don’t really need the names, do you?

Using up the stash

I’ve stashed a lot of DSP in my craft room (that’s Designer Series Paper in Stampin’ Up! shorthand.)  Some of it I loved so much I wouldn’t use – flat out hoarding.  Some of it I just couldn’t get inspired, and some of it I just plain forgot I had it.

I decided to use some of it up to make clipboards for my club members.

Clipboards 1

This is the Sweet Pea DSP pack from the Occasions Mini catalog and something else that you will be totally surprised to learn I cannot remember the name of.  And yes, that is bad grammar but some days it just goes that way!

Clipboards 2

These are both from the Sweet Pea DSP, though I’m pretty sure that Saffron paper is from last year’s SAB.

Clipboards 3

One more Sweet Pea…and the one behind it (the one with the funny light reflection from my camera) was called…hmmm…Afternoon Tea?  Not sure, but I remember it has Groovy Guava in it so you know it’s “vintage”.

I’ll share more another day.

Mama’s Got a Brand New Bag

I’m not going to tell you how long this bag sat in front of my sewing machine, almost completed, while I got distracted with other projects.  Honestly, I think there must be something to this adult onset ADD thing.  It’s either that or caffeine, and it couldn’t be the caffeine, now, could it??

Big Shot Scallop Square bag

I used the Big Shot and the Scallop Square Bigz die.  These are some of my favorite colors, and I’m the first to admit that the patterns are a little busy…but so am I 🙂  Do you like my button?  It’s genuine vintage…from my grandmother’s stash.

Angie Juda has a great video if you need the step by step.  My improvement was to add a cell phone pocket and a ring to hang my keys on in the inside of the bag.  A bag this deep eats keys for lunch.

Do you have a Big Shot?  What are you waiting for?  Anne’s Online Store.  You’ll wonder why you waited so long.

Pick a Happy Petal

The Fancy Favor box is just the right size for little gifts – a gift card, a piece of jewelry, movie tickets or even cookies.  It’s easy to cut out and put together, and with a few leftover scraps of card stock you can make it into a little jewel:

Pick a Petal Favor

  • Pick a Petal and Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp sets
  • Certainly Celery, Whisper White, and Cameo Coral card stock
  • Bermuda Bay, Certainly Celery and Cameo Coral Classic ink pad
  • Horizontal slot and Medium Tag punches
  • Bermuda Bay polka dot ribbon; Linen thread
  • Big Shot and Fancy Favor die

Do you see the little polka dotted tag in there?  I stamped a couple of extra petals for the flower and decided not to use the polka dot ones, so I punched one to make a polka dot tag.  I know.  Simple things make me happy.  That’s not so bad, is it?

Mama, do you Mambo?

I love to play with color.  I love the moods and energy it evokes, and the simple pleasure that comes from looking at a pleasing combination of colors.  When I chanced on the photo for the Inkspirations Challenge, it felt deeply feminine…like a Southern Belle sitting on a porch, all dressed up and sipping iced tea – without leaving a trace of lipstick on her glass, of course!

Inkspirations 21

Big, full pink blossoms, crystal and tapers…in pink and cream…doesn’t that say feminine to you?  Here is my response:

Thoughts and Prayers for Mother's Day

  • Thoughts and Prayers, All Holidays and Bella Toile stamp sets
  • Naturals White, Pretty in Pink, Melon Mambo and Close to Cocoa card stock
  • Close to Cocoa, Pretty in Pink and Melon Mambo Classic ink pads
  • Pretty in Pink and Melon Mambo Stampin’ Write Markers and a Blender pen
  • Scallop Trim Border and Double Rectangle punches; Rhinestone and Filigree brads
  • Melon Mambo Polka Dot Grosgrain Ribbon and Vanilla Smooch Spritz

Yeah, you can see I got a little carried away with the Smooch, huh?  But doesn’t it give a nice candle-lit sort of look?  That’s what I was going for 🙂

Be sure you take a good look at that pretty little Filigree brad.  You could have a package of those (or stars, flowers or circles) for free with the purchase of select stamp sets this month from Stampin’ Up!  Check my Online Store in the Promotions page for details.

If you’d like to see what others have done for this challenge, check this post from Kirsty.  She’s helping out this week.
