Thankful Friends and Aspen Tree dies

I love trees. There were beautiful aspens growing outside my first apartment in college and this beautiful Aspen Tree die cut brings back memories of standing on the second floor deck, studying their intricate bark. (I know the leaf doesn’t match, I’m claiming artistic license.)

The clean edges of the die cut trees contrast well with the soft coloring achieved with daubers and the Blending Brush. Starry Sky is a perfect choice for a twilight sky behind the trees, and the little “dits” from Forever Fern suggest distant constellations.

I cut a stack of these Aspen Trees and keep finding new ways to style them. Gnomes, reindeer, birds, even Santa in a sleigh cutting across the sky would all work here, and in the spring, washes of rhododendron could fill the bottom half of the back panel. Hello Harvest with a Charming Sentiment

Hello Harvest stamps lend themselves to the masking technique, and today I’ve placed the floral image on top of that big juicy pumpkin with the help of our masking paper. It’s a great card to reproduce, as once you’ve cut the mask it’s good for many repetitions.

  • Accessories: Big Boss, Sentiment Silhouettes dies, Deckle Rectangle dies, Masking Paper, Rustic Harvest DSP, Leaf Labels and Amber Gems, Stampin’ Blends, Dimensionals

I created a mask with the floral image by stamping it on our new masking paper and cutting it out with my snips. (The die would have been much faster, but my brain wasn’t working very well that morning.) You could use a sticky note instead of masking paper, but the beauty of masking paper is that the entire page is sticky, so you don’t have lifted edges. It’s also quite thin, so your layered image doesn’t have gaps.

I stamped the flowers first, then covered them with the mask and stamped the pumpkin. The next step was coloring, and oh, I do love to color, especially with Stampin’ Blends! I chose a sentiment from the Charming Sentiments bundle, inked it in Cajun Craze, and cut it out with the matching die. Both the sentiment and the focal point panel are mounted on Stampin’ Dimensionals.

On the inside, I came up with a little trick to expand the interior panel. I cut a strip of DSP about 1 1/4″ wide and placed it on the long edge of the Basic White panel. I ran both pieces through the Big Boss together using the Deckle Rectangle dies. I’ve actually skooched (highly technical stamping term) the DSP to the right a bit so I could get a wider interior panel.

This card could be a birthday card, thinking of you, or any number of other sentiments. I like to keep a few of these in my card stash without the sentiment – it just takes a moment to stamp and cut what you need and attach it to the front with dimensionals.

The leaves and amber gems are not available but are expected the week of November 7th. In the meantime, you can put together this entire card and add the gems later or substitute something you already have. Don’t wait on the Rustic Harvest DSP – it’s on the Low Inventory list! Shop today!

Soft Seedlings in Autumn Technicolor

I have a bit of a fangirl obsession with one of our Stampin’ Up! Artisan Design Team members. Tammy Wilson just WOWs me with her creativity, and this card is very similar to her Soft Seedlings project last month. The technique is very easy and a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to try it with other images.

This is a variation on the baby wipe technique (add drops of ink to baby wipes) but the results are more vivid because you apply the ink directly to the stamp with a dauber. It’s an addictive process because each leaf turns out differently! I made half a dozen of these a couple of evenings ago and it was astonishingly therapeutic (well, all stamping is therapeutic).

The TYP (Take Your Pick) tool is indispensable when you’re adding small embellishments. Use the flat end to pick up and place the Glue Dot, and use the putty end for the embellishment (I call the putty something else but this is family blog, lol – although little kids specialize in this particular sticky bit!)

I added a few little seed pods on the inside. When you make your own cards, you get to do that!

AMAZING YEAR meets the Scrap File

I took my paper snips to Amazing Year to create the focal point for this card. I colored the bouquet with my Stampin’ Blends and rummaged through the bits and pieces on my craft desk to pull a card together:

I had such fun preparing the Deckled Rectangle for this bouquet. A little watercolor wash, a few flicks from my Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Write marker (flick the brush against the cap – try it!) and that white panel is elevated to something special.

The two different pieces of DSP were scraps just begging to be used. In the photo, that green panel looks like it’s been embossed, but it’s just the design of the DSP popping off the page. It worked really well with the Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder.

A little bakers twine, pulled apart and tied into a soft bow, accents the bouquet. I trimmed the “Enjoy Your Day” tag off the stem and attached it separately because 1) the connection was too thin and it would be wonky and 2) I wanted it tucked almost underneath the bouquet. It’s a great sentiment because it covers a lot of occasions.

Natural Prints meet Hues of Happiness

Hues of Happiness Designer Series Papers are colorful, but they’re not chaotic. They make a perfect backdrop for a single image. Here they highlight the Maidenhair Fern from Natural Prints:

I chose Fresh Freesia out of that DSP to offset the brilliant green of Granny Apple. I like that they’re similar intensities, and emotionally those two colors almost vibrate together. I think that makes “the message really “To a wonderful friend” really resonate.

I flicked the edge of my Highland Heather Stampin’ Write marker against the cap to get that fine spatter. It’s hard to see in photos but in your hand, it softens the Basic White card stock.

The Timeworn Type 3D embossing folder is my current favorite. Does that happen to you? For a while I was all about the Fern EF, and then I got hooked on the Tropical Hideaway background stamp. Now it’s Timeworn Type, but don’t hold your breath – I’m pretty fickle.

This card actually began as a Stampin’ Blends practice project. I wanted to work on shading, and that bear was my subject. I really liked the way it turned out, but it sat on my craft desk for a long time waiting for the right moment. When I started thinking about swaps, this card came together almost by itself.

Backstage has allowed the demonstrator leaders to finally able to meet one another in person. Covid has limited our opportunities to gather, and I’m sure many of you will agree that virtual gatherings only go so far. Since Stampin’ Up! is a multi-national organization, I’ve had the chance to meet fellow demonstrators from Europe and the South Pacific as well as the U.S and Canada this week. To say it’s been amazing would be an understatement.

I had such a good time with the bear, I decided to try the kangaroo as well. My eldest daughter is an Aussie, so the ‘roo is practically a member of the family.

In terms of coloring, this is actually a relatively simple project – just the critter and the poppies. There’s enough shading to keep it interesting, but not so much that you can’t do a few for some of your best new friends in the world.

Tropical Hideaway: So Many Ways

Given where I live, it’s pretty sad to say I was late to the Tropical Hideaway party. This background stamp MAKES a card – any card – as quick or as fussy as you’d like. And the leaves? Just stunning.

My first attempt to add color to this image was with watercolor – just the Waterpainter Brush, some ink from my reinker bottle, and some water. I admit I am not thrilled with the result – it looks too muddy for my taste.

When you pair the watercoloring with the brushed Brick Embossing folder, the softness seems complimentary. Add a little of everyone’s favorite white crinkle ribbon, and viola!

I like a crisper look, and the good news is that NOT watercoloring is even faster! A couple of quick tags from the Tailor Made Tags dies and cut the 3/8″ woven ribbon down the middle, and you have a brand new feeling in this card! Similar colors – the first is Soft Succulent, the second is Bermuda Bay – but they have very different energies.

I’ve had a hippo fest all week long, so plan on seeing more! They may or may not all be purple 😁


Coloring the hippos with Stampin’ Blends is easy, and while you would be within your rights to choose Gray Granite or Crumb Cake, I am giving you my permission, nay, my blessing, to make your hippo any color you like. Call it creative license.

Butterfly Brilliance is a perfect bundle for getting a lot done in a single turn of the Stamp Cut and Emboss machine. The stamp is a large format, and the images fit into a single die yielding 6 butterflies with one crank! I tried the butterflies with both Stampin’ Blends and Watercolor Pencils, and was surprised how much I preferred the pencils.

The image is stamped in Sahara Sand. I found the pencils easier to use on this detailed image, and I liked having the ability to shade even in a very small space. By layering colors I could create transitions, and I had a great time choosing colors for this never-found-in-real life butterfly.

To keep the focus on the butterfly, I used a Basic White panel on a Basic White card base. The panel is popped up on dimensionals, as is the butterfly.

I was inspired by THIS CARD (thank you, Mikaela) but I wanted to use the clouds from the Sunshine & Rainbow DSP. Oh so coincidentally 😏, they fit PERFECTLY in our Cloud Punch (which I am sorry to report is also currently unavailable, but is expected in the warehouse on March 28th). I punched out a full page of clouds and cloud pieces, then set to work deciding how to use them.

This doesn’t have to be a baby card at all, but that’s how I intend to use it. I made a second version using Bermuda Bay as an accent color instead of Flirty Flamingo, and I moved the clouds around. I also used the Sunshine & Rainbow DSP behind the opening instead of Simply Marbelous.

And then, just for fun, I changed the sentiment. This one is from the Sale-a-bration 2022 stamp set Special Moments, and it’s full of not-so-everyday messages for all types of everyday occasions.

What do you think? Which of these 3 versions really hits the mark? It was certainly a very pleasant afternoon spent making them.
