Not-so-Frightening Feline

So…what do you think of my new look?  I had a lot of fun with MDS2 over the weekend.

Now on to stamping…I think the world of the Stampin’ Up! design team.  They have created some fantastic artwork and constantly challenge me to justify yet another purchase.  However, I have one small complaint:  names.  I don’t want to make a big issue about it, but some of the names that have been given stamp sets seem like a bit of a stretch (and don’t EVEN begin to ask me about colors!!)

Frightening Feline is a perfect example.  There is nothing that I can see that is frightening – except perhaps for the word frightening that appears at least twice in the graphic art.  Goofy, yes.  Sleek, certainly.  Whiskered – well, I could see that too.  But not frightening.  Stampin’ Up! has a tremendous affection for alliteration and that’s all I can imagine is behind this name.

Enough grumbling…

It’s just a teeny piece of that Striped Satin Ribbon but I will tell you it is luscious!  I would love to see this product linger, Stampin’ Up!  You can even name it whatever you like 🙂

Settling into routine

Captain Stupidhead at RestIt’s been an interesting week, this first official Empty Nest week.  The cat is doing his best to convince us that the nest is NOT empty, that he is still here and that he needs attention and he needs it now.  But clearly it’s not the same – you can’t throw a child out the back door and come back 8 hours later, lah dee dah.  Captain Stupidhead has a lot to say, but if you keep him fed the rest is easy.

Mr Maui Stamper and I are doing the same things we did when there were chickens in the nest, but it feels different now.  I’m not thinking about what the family wants or needs, I’m thinking about the present.  We were married for 6 years before we had our first child, and that BC (Before Children) lifestyle is a comfortable fit.  Of course, our kids are an enormous part of our lives, and we are in touch with them often, but they aren’t on my To-Do list now.  Well, they are of course…there’s a wedding early next year, and plane tickets for Thanksgiving…but it’s not an every day type of thing.

You would think that I would have stamped up a storm by now, but the sad truth is that my stamp studio has been a scene of absolute and atrocious chaos since before convention.  I’ve been up here a couple of times trying to make progress.  Finally last night I got serious with the heaps, bits and pieces, methodically working through the mess.  It was a late night, but I’m happy to report success.  There’s still some work to do – I have a number of brand new sets that aren’t put together – but I can think in here.

I have a card to share, too.  I didn’t make it last night, but a couple of days ago.  A friend of ours lost his dad, and though it wasn’t unexpected, the loss of someone dear weighs on your heart.  I remember when my grandmother died at the age of 92 – she didn’t remember us any more, and she wasn’t the same energetic woman I’d grown up with, but still when she died I was sad to realize we wouldn’t make any new memories together.  Fortunately, I have wonderful memories of both of my grandmothers, and those stories help to define who I am.

Thoughts and Prayers

  • Thoughts and Prayers, Artistic Etchings, and Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp sets
  • Naturals Ivory and Soft Suede card stock
  • Baja Breeze and Crumb Cake FFIP
  • Baja Breeze Stampin’ Write marker
  • Baja Breeze Seam Binding
  • Oval and Small oval (retired) punches
  • Stampin’ Dimensionals

I’m really sorry that Stampin’ Up! retired that small oval punch, and I’m a bit stubborn about giving mine up as a result.  You could just use the regular oval and ink up the edges, but that’s not what I wanted.  Well.   And that’s that.

And here I was going to say something about embracing change…

Raising money for Ronald McDonald House

Every year Stampin’ Up! designs a stamp set dedicated to raising money for Ronald McDonald House.  This year, each demonstrator attending convention received a free Moving Forward set and I’ve been busy with mine:

Moving Forward

  • Moving Forward and Itty Bitty Banners stamp sets
  • Whisper White, Gumball Green and Midnight Muse card stock
  • Patio Party Designer Series paper
  • Midnight Muse and Gumball Green FFIP (Firm Foam Ink Pads)
  • Midnight Muse and Gumball Green Stampin’ Write markers
  • 1 3/4 inch circle and Bitty Shapes punches
  • Bitty Banners Framelits
  • Finishing Touches Edgelit
  • Essentials Paper Piercing Pack
  • Rhinestones and Pearls Jewels
  • Stampin’ Dimensionals

As a parent, I’ve spent more than one restless night in a hospital worrying about one of my children, but I’m grateful none of them has had to be hospitalized long term.  It’s difficult to watch your child struggle with health issues and to maintain control of your emotions – at least in your child’s presence.  When I think about the stress of long-term hospitalization and the accompanying expense, it becomes very simple to want to support an organization like Ronald McDonald House.

Every Moving Forward stamp set sold generates a $3.00 donation from Stampin’ Up!  to Ronald McDonald House.  It’s such a delightful, versatile set – doesn’t it belong on YOUR wish list?  Shop now at my Online Store   #126332 clear, #126320 wood

It’s Happy Hour…

It’s always Happy Hour somewhere…

Maui Stamper Happy Hour

  • Happy Hour stamp set
  • Daffodil Delight and Tempting Turquoise FFIP
  • Daffodil Delight and Tempting Turquoise Stampin’ Write markers
  • Whisper White, Tempting Turquoise and Lucky Limeade card stock
  • Summer Smooches Designer Series paper
  • Daffodil Delight 1/8 inch taffeta ribbon

These were so easy to make – and I couldn’t stop once I got started!

Maui Stamper Happy Hour

Doesn’t everybody deserve a cheer of their own once in a while – or two of them – or even three?

Maui Stamper Happy Hour

I put a little bit of Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint on the cocktail glasses with a dauber, but it doesn’t show well.  What it needs is Dazzling Diamonds, but Mr. Maui Stamper has a significant aversion to GLITTER.  He doesn’t ask much, so I keep my bling as much under control as possible.

These are fun and fast and there are loads of sentiments in this set – good for any happy occasion!

Everyone needs a Reason to Smile…

And who wouldn’t smile about a beautiful stamp set for only $5??

These daisies are dancing-in-the-breeze kind of daisies – they have a lot of movement.  This set is a Two-Step set and comes with an image to fill the flower, but I wanted more control over the color contrast in the petals so I used the aquapainter.

Hmmm.  I think it needs a splash or two from the Color Spritzer.

Remember the details:

  • Reason to Smile wood (#131274)
  • Reason to Smile clear mount (#131275)
  • Either one only $5 when you order any $50 in Stampin’ Up! products

One last Digger

There are 3 heavy-duty digging machines in the I Dig You stamp set.  I think I’ve mentioned that there was a time in my life – when my son was young – that I knew the name and function of nearly any piece of equipment you might see on a construction site.  My son and I checked books out from the library, watched hours and hours of video, and of course made field trips to any job site we could find in order to watch the Diggers Dig.

At one point we would walk past an especially interesting site every day (ok, I walked, he rode in the stroller).  The work began with tearing down an old, small beach house, then progressed to grading and preparing the ground for construction.  Once the new structure started going up there were different pieces of equipment being used, and we were such frequent observers that the construction crew would stop and chat with us.  My son knew the function of every machine and it seemed he could sit for hours watching them work.

Of course, we never saw a loader operated by a giraffe:

Maui Stamper I Dig You

  • I Dig You and Itty Bitty Banners stamp set
  • Baja Breeze, Riding Hood Red, Crumb Cake, Basic Black and Very Vanilla card stock
  • Riding Hood Red and Baja Breeze Classic ink pads

  • Big Shot and Bitty Banners Framelits
  • Linen Thread
  • Rhinestone Jewels
  • Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint
  • Crystal Effects

  • 1/2 inch circle punch

Every stamp set needs a bit of whimsey, and small animals ready to drive big construction equipment is nothing if not whimsical.

Workshop Words

Convention is coming…and there’s so much to do to be ready.  It’s a 4-day celebration of Stampin’ Goodness and I can’t wait!  Stampin’ Up! does a fabulous job of recognizing, rewarding and encouraging all of the demonstrators in attendance and I’m looking forward to this year’s surprises – because I know there will be surprises in store for us!

Last year, we earned an exclusive stamp set available only to demonstrators who attended convention.  Each of the expressions in the set was business related to use with customers and team-mates.  It was just the thing to recognize a few Maui Stampers that have accomplished some big goals in the past 6 weeks:

  • White Bakers Twine
  • Jewels Pearls
  • Decorative label punch

It’s such a treat to get an “atta-girl” card in the mail…who wouldn’t like an unexpected pat on the back?

Clean and Simple Thanks

Clean and simple isn’t a regular part of my repertoire.  It’s a style I admire, but one I find difficult to execute.  I just can’t seem to stop adding things, and before you know it my cards are covered with layers, embellishments, and road signs.  However, my son needed thank you notes.  Clean and simple fit the bill:

My Friend Thank You

  • My Friend and Perfectly Penned stamp sets
  • Very Vanilla card stock
  • Crumb Cake and Riding Hood Red Classic ink pads
  • Riding Hood Red 3/8 inch taffeta ribbon
  • Rhinestone jewels

My apologies;  the Riding Hood Red ribbon is retired, but Real Red is available and would be a perfect substitute.

Why don’t I make more Clean and Simple cards?  I really like them – it’s a mystery, I guess.  I don’t mind not knowing the answer.

{flashback:  Catholic Elementary school.  Classroom full of 11 year olds playing  “stump the priest” asking ridiculous questions.  His response?  A placid smile and “It’s a mystery, my child”.}

Note that this card was made before my FFIP arrived.  I could spend the next 6 months remaking cards with the FFIP to see how much better they looked.  Or I could just make new cards.  Yeah.  I think that’s what I’ll do.

Make {another} Cake

This set has so much potential, as does the fabulous Comfort Cafe Designer Series paper:

Make a Cake Starfruit

  • Make a Cake and Itty Bitty Banners stamp sets
  • Very Vanilla, Summer Starfruit and Midnight Muse card stock
  • Comfort Cafe Designer Series paper
  • Summer Starfruit, Raspberry Ripple and Midnight Muse FFIP (Firm Foam Ink Pads)
  • Summer Starfruit, Raspberry Ripple and Midnight Muse Stampin’ Write markers
  • Raspberry Ripple 3/8 inch Stitched Satin Ribbon
  • Big Shot and Bitty Banners Framelits
  • Stamp-a-ma-jig
  • Jewels Rhinestones
  • Stampin’ Dimensionals

The first card I made with this set felt too busy – a victim of the philosophy “More is More” but not in a good way.  I wanted to keep a similar feeling but streamline it a bit.

The first step was to choose the Designer Series paper, and I like the balanced feeling this paper gives.  Once I had it in place the rest of the card came together pretty easily.  My Stamp-a-ma-jig came in handy; despite the clear stamps, the lines on these stamps really need to be in the EXACT right spot for the best look, and the SAMJ was just the thing.  It’s an indispensable tool for me.

Those Bitty Banners Framelits are fast becoming indispensable as well – perfect flags and banners every time!  Not that everything always has to be perfect, but when it turns out that way it’s pretty sweet.  Speaking of sweet, it’s mango season right now and we have an abundance of sweet, juicy, fragrant mangoes in our house.  There’s nothing in the world like fresh fruit, ripened to perfection on the tree.  I have orange hands and fingernails from peeling and slicing, but I don’t mind when the reward is fresh mango.

Making friends with Gumball Green

Time for a little confession:  the first time I set eyes on Gumball Green, I thought “Forget that!”  I’ve softened a bit:

Dig you Gumball Cajun

  • I Dig You stamp set
  • Whisper White, Cajun Craze and Gumball Green card stock
  • Floral District Designer Series Paper
  • Daffodil Delight, Cajun Craze and Gumball Green FFIP (Firm Foam Ink pads)
  • Cajun Craze Stampin’ Write marker
  • Piercing tool and new piercing template
  • Daffodil Delight 1/4 inch stitched grosgrain ribbon
  • Rhinestone jewels
  • Stampin’ Dimensional

The Big Dump Truck definitely needed a driver!  It might not have NEEDED the sparkly hub caps, but they are certainly an improvement.  Work with me here.

I splurged on our new piercing tool and templates and I’m really glad I did.  The piercing tool is made in the same ergonomic model as the stylus that comes with the Simply Scored tool, and it’s very comfortable in my hand.  The template is much larger and I didn’t have to skootch it along in order to get a nice long pierced lines.  Definitely a lot of bang for the buck!

I cannot imagine getting this kind of ink coverage with our old style ink pads.  FFIP RULE.

Gumball Green is not a timid green by any stretch, but it’s a fun color to play with.  I would call it a Kelly green.  Matter of fact, last weekend I saw a gorgeous Kate Spade handbag at the Nordstrom Rack in just this shade of green.  I was sorely tempted, but I bought a new bag in Boston and the Rack’s price was a big savings but it was still Kate Spade if you get my drift.  The new Gumball Green bag will have to go to another home…this time.
