I struggled for a bit with the Designer Series paper: it’s pretty bold, and I was trying to use it almost full size on the card front. It was too busy and it overwhelmed the floral frame. But there were some skinny scraps in the chaos that calls itself my craft desk, and they turned out to be just the thing!

More out of the box…I wanted wispy bits of gold ribbon and there was none to be had. However, the end of my gold shimmer ribbon was a little frayed, and as soon as I started pulling on it I realized it was exactly what I needed!! This time I used the warp, not the weft, by cutting a 12 inch piece of ribbon and trimming off one edge. These pieces started unraveling as though they were made for that very purpose!

Kindest Gnome

Oh, these gnomes! They are such fun to cut and assemble like paper dolls! I die cut a big stack of pieces and spent a delightful afternoon putting them together. So much more fun than cleaning out closets. I recommend it.

I had a big stack of Aspens cut from a previous project and a donsy of gnomes (yup, check it out!) The Sun Prints DSP pulled it all together – those papers are so versatile! A little Stella on the embossed lines on his beard dressed up my gnome without overdoing it.

I brushed a little Sahara Sand on the aspens and gave them a little Wink too. For some ridiculous reason I decided the gnome’s hat needed something, so it got a funny Vesuvius tassel. I think I told you earlier this month that I’ve been working outside the box!

It’s quick and easy to cut out the pieces to the gnomes as they’re all pretty simple. Give it a try! See the Gnomes HERE.

Wattle: The Brightest Beauty

Have you seen a wattle shrub? It’s a member of the Acacia family, and if you’re an Aussie, you likely know it well. It’s the National flower, growing across the entire country – and it’s a beautiful stamp set in the mini catalog as well.

The wattle is beloved by Aussies, and I’ve got my very own beloved Aussie, so you can see why I might be fond of this glorious explosion of color. For my card, I colored the tiny blooms with Stampin’ Write markers, using a combination of Crushed Curry and Daffodil Delight. I used So Saffron for the mask on the card base to avoid overwhelming the flowers – a lot of yellow is, well, a LOT of yellow!

Did you see my custom trim? I’ve been feeling pretty out-of-the-box lately with trim. This particular bit is what you get when you pull apart the White Frayed Ribbon. I’ve cut it in half and tried playing (unsuccessfully) with the warp, but this card uses what would be considered the weft:

It initially comes apart quickly and easily, but as it gets longer, you have to tease it out with the pointy end of your Take Your Pick tool. It has a thin, wooly look – but be careful not to tangle it, or you’ll just need to pick out another length. Ask me how I know.

How do you challenge yourself to think outside the box? Honestly, for me it’s often boredom – I’ve used this, I’ve used that, I want something NEW. (oh dear, I think you know why I’m a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator now…)

NOVEMBER 2022 DIY: Flowers of Home

This month it’s more die cuts and less stamping. When you’re only making one of something, all that cranking of the Big Boss isn’t such a big deal:

I colored the Textural Elements (currently unavailable, expected this week) with Stampin’ Write markers. I used Pumpkin Pie for the “berries” and added just a touch of Cajun Craze to them at the stem. The stems themselves are Old Olive (as much as I love so many other greens, Old Olive is my go-to green!)

I cut a BUNCH of these little branch-bits and started playing. It’s a good thing I cut a lot: I accidentally adhered the first round to the wrong calendar. It looked great, but nope. Calendar so nice, I made it twice.

It’s hard to believe today is November 1st. That means the official end of hurricane season (yay!), but we’re still waiting for the weather to turn a little cooler. Soon the humpback whales will arrive from Alaska, and we’ll watch – and listen – for them. Did you know if you go into the ocean during whale season and put your head underwater you’re likely to hear them sing? Well, now you do.

Leaves of Holly Triple Fun Fold Card

At Backstage, Stampin’ Up!’s Leadership Conference, I received a swapped card made with this triple Fun Fold technique. It’s easy to do – but you do have to pay attention, as I’ve assembled it backwards more than once.

  • Stamps: Leaves of Holly
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Cherry Cobbler, Real Red, Soft Succulent, Mossy Meadow, Old Olive
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Holly Berry Dies, Boughs of Holly DSP, Gold 3/8″ Shimmer ribbon, Red Foil (retired, but Festive Foils is an alternative), Stampin’ Dimensionals, Stampin’ Trimmer

This card does get a little thick, so you might need an additional postage stamp to mail it. However, it does have space behind the panels for stamped or handwritten messages or a photo, so you can really customize it to suit your purposes.

Here’s a FILE that will help you cut your paper to create this card. Be warned, there aren’t any photos!

Thankful Friends and Aspen Tree dies

I love trees. There were beautiful aspens growing outside my first apartment in college and this beautiful Aspen Tree die cut brings back memories of standing on the second floor deck, studying their intricate bark. (I know the leaf doesn’t match, I’m claiming artistic license.)

  • Stamps: Framed Occasions, Forever Fern
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Starry Sky, Soft Suede
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Aspen Tree Dies, Fall Leaves and Amber Gems (back in stock week of 11/7), Blending Brushes, Daubers, Linen Thread

The clean edges of the die cut trees contrast well with the soft coloring achieved with daubers and the Blending Brush. Starry Sky is a perfect choice for a twilight sky behind the trees, and the little “dits” from Forever Fern suggest distant constellations.

I cut a stack of these Aspen Trees and keep finding new ways to style them. Gnomes, reindeer, birds, even Santa in a sleigh cutting across the sky would all work here, and in the spring, washes of rhododendron could fill the bottom half of the back panel. Hello Harvest with a Charming Sentiment

Hello Harvest stamps lend themselves to the masking technique, and today I’ve placed the floral image on top of that big juicy pumpkin with the help of our masking paper. It’s a great card to reproduce, as once you’ve cut the mask it’s good for many repetitions.

  • Accessories: Big Boss, Sentiment Silhouettes dies, Deckle Rectangle dies, Masking Paper, Rustic Harvest DSP, Leaf Labels and Amber Gems, Stampin’ Blends, Dimensionals

I created a mask with the floral image by stamping it on our new masking paper and cutting it out with my snips. (The die would have been much faster, but my brain wasn’t working very well that morning.) You could use a sticky note instead of masking paper, but the beauty of masking paper is that the entire page is sticky, so you don’t have lifted edges. It’s also quite thin, so your layered image doesn’t have gaps.

I stamped the flowers first, then covered them with the mask and stamped the pumpkin. The next step was coloring, and oh, I do love to color, especially with Stampin’ Blends! I chose a sentiment from the Charming Sentiments bundle, inked it in Cajun Craze, and cut it out with the matching die. Both the sentiment and the focal point panel are mounted on Stampin’ Dimensionals.

On the inside, I came up with a little trick to expand the interior panel. I cut a strip of DSP about 1 1/4″ wide and placed it on the long edge of the Basic White panel. I ran both pieces through the Big Boss together using the Deckle Rectangle dies. I’ve actually skooched (highly technical stamping term) the DSP to the right a bit so I could get a wider interior panel.

This card could be a birthday card, thinking of you, or any number of other sentiments. I like to keep a few of these in my card stash without the sentiment – it just takes a moment to stamp and cut what you need and attach it to the front with dimensionals.

The leaves and amber gems are not available but are expected the week of November 7th. In the meantime, you can put together this entire card and add the gems later or substitute something you already have. Don’t wait on the Rustic Harvest DSP – it’s on the Low Inventory list! Shop today!

Soft Seedlings in Autumn Technicolor

I have a bit of a fangirl obsession with one of our Stampin’ Up! Artisan Design Team members. Tammy Wilson just WOWs me with her creativity, and this card is very similar to her Soft Seedlings project last month. The technique is very easy and a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to try it with other images.

  • Accessories: Big Boss, Deckle Edge Rectangles, Tailored Tags, Timber 3D Embossing Folder, Sponge Daubers, Early Espresso Faux Suede Trim, Daubers, Glue Dots, Take Your Pick (TYP) tool, assorted Sequins

This is a variation on the baby wipe technique (add drops of ink to baby wipes) but the results are more vivid because you apply the ink directly to the stamp with a dauber. It’s an addictive process because each leaf turns out differently! I made half a dozen of these a couple of evenings ago and it was astonishingly therapeutic (well, all stamping is therapeutic).

The TYP (Take Your Pick) tool is indispensable when you’re adding small embellishments. Use the flat end to pick up and place the Glue Dot, and use the putty end for the embellishment (I call the putty something else but this is family blog, lol – although little kids specialize in this particular sticky bit!)

I added a few little seed pods on the inside. When you make your own cards, you get to do that!
