CIRCLE SAYINGS: USING UP BITS AND PIECES

I have a basket on my craft desk filled with odds and ends. It’s larger than it used to be – or should be – but I’m doing my best to clear it out. This card is almost ALL bits and pieces, and I hope you’ll forgive me for using retired products. There are current replacements for nearly all of this!

Zany Zoo stamps and Designer Series Papers has an entire zoo filled with critters to stand in for that hippo, and our new Exposed Brick Embossing folder is even better than the old brick one! But there are two reasons I’ve shared this card.

First is that you can have a lot of fun with bits and pieces. I still have a bunch of circles left to play with, and it’s a great challenge to create a design with circles. Second is that when a project catches your eye, while you may WANT to duplicate it exactly, with a little looking about, you might discover that you have what you need to create your own version!

Stampin’ Blends bring this hippo to life with simple shading and only one color! Basic Grey and white are a variation of my favorite Black & White & POP of color combo.

Adding a little “something” to the inside of the card personalizes it, and shucks, isn’t that why we make cards? I needed another cupcake, and the Happy Birthday just the icing on top. <wink>

Hello Harvest with a Charming Sentiment

Hello Harvest stamps lend themselves to the masking technique, and today I’ve placed the floral image on top of that big juicy pumpkin with the help of our masking paper. It’s a great card to reproduce, as once you’ve cut the mask it’s good for many repetitions.

I created a mask with the floral image by stamping it on our new masking paper and cutting it out with my snips. (The die would have been much faster, but my brain wasn’t working very well that morning.) You could use a sticky note instead of masking paper, but the beauty of masking paper is that the entire page is sticky, so you don’t have lifted edges. It’s also quite thin, so your layered image doesn’t have gaps.

I stamped the flowers first, then covered them with the mask and stamped the pumpkin. The next step was coloring, and oh, I do love to color, especially with Stampin’ Blends! I chose a sentiment from the Charming Sentiments bundle, inked it in Cajun Craze, and cut it out with the matching die. Both the sentiment and the focal point panel are mounted on Stampin’ Dimensionals.

On the inside, I came up with a little trick to expand the interior panel. I cut a strip of DSP about 1 1/4″ wide and placed it on the long edge of the Basic White panel. I ran both pieces through the Big Boss together using the Deckle Rectangle dies. I’ve actually skooched (highly technical stamping term) the DSP to the right a bit so I could get a wider interior panel.

This card could be a birthday card, thinking of you, or any number of other sentiments. I like to keep a few of these in my card stash without the sentiment – it just takes a moment to stamp and cut what you need and attach it to the front with dimensionals.

AMAZING YEAR meets the Scrap File

I took my paper snips to Amazing Year to create the focal point for this card. I colored the bouquet with my Stampin’ Blends and rummaged through the bits and pieces on my craft desk to pull a card together:

I had such fun preparing the Deckled Rectangle for this bouquet. A little watercolor wash, a few flicks from my Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Write marker (flick the brush against the cap – try it!) and that white panel is elevated to something special.

The two different pieces of DSP were scraps just begging to be used. In the photo, that green panel looks like it’s been embossed, but it’s just the design of the DSP popping off the page. It worked really well with the Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder.

A little bakers twine, pulled apart and tied into a soft bow, accents the bouquet. I trimmed the “Enjoy Your Day” tag off the stem and attached it separately because 1) the connection was too thin and it would be wonky and 2) I wanted it tucked almost underneath the bouquet. It’s a great sentiment because it covers a lot of occasions.

Natural Prints meet Hues of Happiness

Hues of Happiness Designer Series Papers are colorful, but they’re not chaotic. They make a perfect backdrop for a single image. Here they highlight the Maidenhair Fern from Natural Prints:

I chose Fresh Freesia out of that DSP to offset the brilliant green of Granny Apple. I like that they’re similar intensities, and emotionally those two colors almost vibrate together. I think that makes “the message really “To a wonderful friend” really resonate.

I flicked the edge of my Highland Heather Stampin’ Write marker against the cap to get that fine spatter. It’s hard to see in photos but in your hand, it softens the Basic White card stock.

The Timeworn Type 3D embossing folder is my current favorite. Does that happen to you? For a while I was all about the Fern EF, and then I got hooked on the Tropical Hideaway background stamp. Now it’s Timeworn Type, but don’t hold your breath – I’m pretty fickle.

Another Tropical Hideaway

I’ve been exploring different ways to color the Tropical Hideaway large format stamp. I have to confess: this is not my favorite. I’m happy with the card layout, but the watercolor technique I used made the images blur. That’s how you learn!

I stamped the Tropical Hideway stamp on a Basic White panel using Soft Succulent Ink. I used more Soft Succulent Ink with my Water Painters to add color to the leaves. It was a fun experiment, but it’s not one I expect to repeat. The water caused the outlines to blur too much for my taste.

I enjoyed the process, and the total effect is soft and a little romantic. I added that White Crinkle Ribbon to soften it even more (oh my goodness, I love that ribbon!).

A Little Trailer in the Trees

I mixed and matched the Old Olive and Pear Pizazz ink when I stamped the trees, and I’m not sure if I have a favorite. After all, trees are unique, and the fact that each of these are a little different is pretty true to life. I used a small piece of vellum in the “windows” and then placed the die cuts behind them so you didn’t see through the window to the trees.

Oh, and I stamped “Happy Birthday” just a little bit crooked on purpose. That’s so you know it’s made by hand 🤩

There are a lot of options for creating this card with other focal points. Try the tent from Campology, or the deer from Grassy Grove. You might just have something perfect in your stash! My Hippie Hippo 2.0

Last month I created a card combining Hippest Hippo from Sale-a-bration with Spiral Dye, and I loved it so much I did it again!

I used the Stamparatus with that big Spiral Dye stamp. It helps me position the image straight on the card stock, and it’s easier to thoroughly press on all parts of the stamp. If it doesn’t cover perfectly, the Stamparatus lets me stamp again in the exact same spot! Love it.

I only used 3 colors this time instead of the 4 I used in the First Version. It looks like there’s a little Gorgeous Grape in there, but that’s just the wonder of color blending: Pink + Blue = Purple!

I chose a different hippo and another greeting, but the part I love best is the Metallic Woven Ribbon. I hardly ever use it as a ribbon! In this case I cut a few inches of Sweet Sorbet and Parakeet Party and tied a knot in the center. Using the Take Your Pick tool, I pulled the threads out and then tucked the knot under the hippo. Instant fringe!

Hippo Loves You a TON

I hope you’re lovin’ this Hippo – as you can tell, I surely am! I especially love combining the Hippo with other stamps – today it’s Paradise Palms:

My favorite part of the Hippo dies is all the accessories – I’m not sure if these are supposed to be sunglasses or part of the snorkel, but I love them as regular glasses! The heart is part of those bonus images as well.

The Artistic Mix Decorative Masks are designed so that they can be used together – I’ve just used one here, but it’s addictive to layer them and see what you get.

Making your own cards allows you options you don’t find in the store. I love to add images to the inside of my card as well as the envelope. I layer a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Basic White or Very Vanilla (depending on the card colors) on the inside of every colored card base. It’s a perfect way to dress up the inside of the card, especially when you add palms! (Everything is better with palm trees.)

Hippo in Wonderland

“Hippo, whoooo are youuuuu?” said the Caterpillar (apologies to Lewis Carroll). There’s no caterpillar here, but that winking Hippo is pretty sassy all the same!

I experimented with a lot of Hippo colors, but ultimately decided that my card looked best if the Hippo shared the same colors as the wooden door on the mushroom. I used our new Naturals line of Stampin’ Blends to color them both.

The Storybook Gnomes DSP is a real find! Great colors, great images, and it really makes a card pop. It also helped direct my color choices for this card, and I don’t think I would have used Pale Papaya without that inspiration.

I used a teeny splash of pool party on this Hippo’s eyes and in the window panes. I considered putting a little smooch on that kisser, but decided that would just be lipstick on a…well, you know.

My Hippie Hippo

Can you say GROOOOVY??? As soon as I started stamping the Hippo (2202 v2 Sale-a-bration) I saw this card in my mind, and it turned out EXACTLY as I imagined it. How often does that happen??

Do you see that flag? I got crafty with the Stylish Shapes dies. I stamped the sentiment and cut it out with the small banner, then used the larger one to cut off one end:

Ooooo, I was feelin’ groooovy 🎶 (da da da dah dah dah da, feelin’ groovy)

I wanted this purple hippo to have a little pizazz, and it was Wink of Stella to the rescue. Well, that and Parakeet Party nails. The little hearts are some of the accessories that come with the Hippos dies, and trust me, you will be reaching for those dies again and again with all of their fun coordinating shapes.

I used daubers to ink up the Spiral Dye stamp (see what they did there?) and I can’t wait to do this again with another set of colors. When I showed this card to my Maui Stamper team, they all said I needed to make a video – so stay tuned, I may just have a YouTube debut!
