Vintage Vogue

Hostess Club is getting in on the Vintage action this month:

Morning Mocha photo wallet

I’ve had a package of Morning Mocha Designer Series paper in my studio for ages and finally broke it open a week or so ago.  What awesome papers!!  They’re great for masculine cards, but I especially love the way they work with a vintage look.  Those rich browns with the hint of metallic really work for me, and the images coordinate with Vintage Vogue.

This little photo wallet is quick and easy – I made a bunch of them a few years ago and decided to revisit the design.  Of course, can’t for the life of me remember where I GOT the design, but that’s why I keep old projects!  This has room for photos, embellishment and some journaling, but it’s small enough for a pocket or purse.

Morning Mocha photo wallet inside

Each page opens out and the whole thing folds up to about 4 inches by 3 1/2 inches.  Slide on the belly band and it’s ready to go!  Designer Series Paper with its  variety of textures is perfect for this project.  Since it’s two-sided, it also allows you to view different patterns on both the inside and outside.  This is a quick project!

Care for a little Espresso with that?

What could be more delicious than Cherry Cobbler combined with a little Espresso?

Fast and Fabulous with Aviary

  • Fast and Fabulous, Aviary, Vintage Vogue and Fabulous Phrases stamp sets
  • Whisper White, Early Espresso and Cherry Cobbler card stock
  • Early Espresso and Cherry Cobbler Classic ink pads
  • Cherry Cobbler ink refill and the Aqua Painter
  • Whisper White Taffeta and Cherry Cobbler Seam Binding
  • Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint

The photo doesn’t pick up the shimmer paint, but it’s applied over the little red bird in the cage.  You just can’t beat shimmer paint for quick and easy sparkle that doesn’t violate the No Glitter Here Treaty.  I’m big on quick and easy, although I’ve been known to do some kind of ridiculous detailing from time to time.   This time of year the focus is on completion!

Speaking of completion, today is The Last Day of the Stampin’ Up! Exploring In Colors

A couple of weeks ago a friend asked me to do a Thank You card for her workshop.  She wanted it to be something simple and reproducible.  She was looking for inspiration for gifts, and thought if she could take the same card and produce it in a few different colors she could make sets.

No problem, I said.  That’s an easy one, I said.

Famous last words.

Maybe the muse was on vacation.  (I live on MAUI, for goodness sakes.  Where would my muse want to GO already?)  Maybe I was putting too much pressure on myself.  Shoot, maybe it was the hormones – they’re responsible for everything else that goes wrong in my life!!  It took much longer than it should have, but I came up with something that made us both happy:

Vintage Vogue Thanks in Poppy

  • Vintage Vogue and A Note of Thanks stamp sets
  • Very Vintage Jumbo Stampin’ Around Wheel
  • Whisper White, Poppy Parade and Early Espresso card stock
  • Early Espresso and Poppy Parade Classic ink pads
  • XL Decorative Label and Bitty Circle punches
  • Crop-a-dile; Stampin’ Sponge; Early Espresso 3/8″ taffeta ribbon

My goal for this card was to come up with a design that could be made in the 2010-2011 In Colors.   I think that’s what made it challenging for me.   I wanted to highlight the great value in the Card Stock and Classic Pad In Color kit –  5 Classic ink pads plus a 20 sheet assortment of the 2010 In Color papers for $29.95 (item 120952).  If you haven’t done the math yet, I’ll do it for you; that’s getting the paper assortment (valued at $6.95) for free.  It’s even in the catalog on page 165, but it doesn’t jump out at you so I like to point it out at workshops…or even in blog posts.

Kangaroo Boo

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Build-a-roo stamp set.  To be honest, that spot encompasses all things Australian since my daughter moved there in February.  She and her boyfriend were with us for almost three glorious weeks recently, and I loved every moment of it.  I’m missing them both:

a Jack-o-roo

  • Build-a-Roo, All Holidays, Vintage Vogue and Sock Monkey Accessories stamp sets
  • Pumpkin Pie, Early Espresso and Very Vanilla card stock
  • Early Espresso, Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie classic ink pads
  • Jumbo brad, Crop-a-dile and Aquapainter
  • 1 1/4 inch Old Olive striped grosgrain ribbon
  • Stamp-a-ma-jig

Kind of a silly card, isn’t it?

Thanks so much, Medallion

It’s been such a long time since I’ve inked up my Medallion stamp.  I still love it just as much as I did the first time I laid eyes on it, but it seems there has been a lot of competition for my time in the stamp room.  The other day I decided to give that Medallion a little inky love:

Thanks So Much Medallion

  • Medallion and Thanks So Much stamps
  • Vintage Vogue Jumbo Stampin’ Around Wheel
  • Whisper White and Pear Pizazz card stock
  • Marina Mist and Pear Pizazz Classic ink pads
  • Marina Mist and Daffodil Delight Stampin’ Write markers
  • Basic Rhinestone Jewels
  • 1/8 inch Daffodil Delight taffeta ribbon
  • 1 3/8 and Scallop Circle punches

I just can’t help cutting out that Medallion.  I’ve done it before and I love the look.  It’s really not that much work and I think it’s well worth the effort.  Matter of fact, when things slow down a little bit (ha ha ha, I crack myself up) I want to make this card in a bunch of different color combinations.  I think it would make a great set.

Stamping and other wonderful things

There’s a group of stampers that meets at my house once a month…well, we call ourselves a stamping group and we definitely do stamp, but we also have a very good time.  We are a really diverse group but the things we all share are a love of crafting and a love of people.  There’s always a little teasing, a little story-telling, and a lot of laughing.   We met last night and here’s one of the cards we made:

Vintage Vogue Gate fold card

  • Vintage Vogue stamp set
  • Very Vanilla, Real Red, Pumpkin Pie and Early Espresso card stock
  • Real Red, Pumpkin Pie and Early Espresso Classic Ink pads and Stampin’ Write markers
  • Real Red 1/4″ grosgrain ribbon, Rhinestone Jewels, Blender pen and Stampin’ Dimensionals
  • Big Shot and Top Note Bigz die

This card is really simple to make and a nice change of pace from a standard card.  Use a  quarter sheet of cardstock for the base and layer on  a piece of cardstock that measures 1/4″ less in both length and width.  Before you attach the two pieces together, insert the two flaps one on each side between  the layers and you’ve got the basic idea.

I didn’t include it in the list of supplies, but the Espresso circle in the center of the Real Red flower is an Owlie Bit.

Do you love to stamp?  Can you get to Maui once a month?  We’d love to have you join us…

Beautiful crochet lace

I can’t believe it took me so long to use this lace!  Sometimes I’m stubborn about using something new like that.  I should have gotten over it sooner.

All of the images in the Just Believe stamp set are gorgeous, but I found myself returning to that same fabulous wildflower bouquet image so I challenged myself.  Yeah, I do that…sometimes with rather disastrous results.  I’m happy to report that this time the results were kinda cool – at least I thought so:

Just Believe Thanks in Jewel colors

  • Just Believe, En Francais and Vintage Vogue stamp sets
  • Whisper White, Concord Crush, Always Artichoke and Riding Hood Red card stock
  • Always Artichoke and Concord Crush Classic ink pads
  • Riding Hood Red and Concord Crush Stampin’ Write markers; Blender pen
  • Corner rounder, Crop-a-dile, Big Shot and Top Note Bigz die
  • Victoria Crochet Trim and Antique brads

I did NOT have to use the Stamp-a-ma-jig for the sentiment in the middle of the label because with our beautiful Clear Mount stamps I could see just where to put it!  I like that 🙂  I also fell in love with this color combination so watch for it again.

This has a real vintage feeling with the brad and that gorgeous crochet lace ribbon.  It’s really soft and easy to work with, and I’m looking forward to using it for some of my holiday projects.  There are some beautiful new products in the Stampin’ Up! Holiday Mini that will be available to the general public on September 1 – be sure you check with your demonstrator to be sure your copy is on the way!

Back to the Circle Circus

When is a circle more than a circle?  When it collaborates with others to form a topiary:

Circle Circus matter of Moments

  • Circle Circus and Elements of Style stamp sets; Vintage Vogue wheel
  • Whisper White, Daffodil Delight, Cajun Craze, Crumb Cake and Certainly Celery card stock
  • Cajun Craze, Crumb Cake and Certainly Celery Classic ink pads
  • Modern Label punch, XL Decorative Label punch (Holiday Mini), various circle punches
  • Big Shot, Top Note die and Lattice Impressions folder
  • Hemp twine, Antique Brads, Stampin’ Sponges and Stampin’ Dimensionals

I had the brilliant idea to twist two strands of Hemp Twine together to make the trunk of the topiary, but my execution was flawed – there’s not enough space between the “topes” and you can hardly see it.  This card is finished, but I’ll be back to the drawing board to try that one again.

The new XL Decorative Label punch makes a pretty terra cotta planter, doesn’t it?  I cut it in half and sponged it with Cajun Craze and Old Olive.  I was trying to get a moss-stained look but I think it would be more effective on a lighter color of cardstock – next time I’ll try Peach Parfait.  Oh, and please don’t judge Daffodil Delight – that’s operator error with the camera.  It’s a lovely buttery shade, not that bright yo yo color!

Good-Bye (Kiwi) Kiss

One thing that crafters in all mediums have in common is a stash.  We hoard special goodies we bought at that out-of-the-way shop we found while traveling, expensive goodies we splurged on in some high-end store, or perhaps most precious, RETIRED goodies.  These are things we can’t get anymore.

I have goodies in all three catagories, but I’m finally relenting and using up some of my retired and retiring paper.  Stampin’ Up! has announced a Color Renovation effective July 1 (You haven’t heard?  Have you been off the planet?) and there just isn’t room for ALL of the old and ALL of the new.  One of my stashes is Kiwi Kiss – paper, ink, and ribbon – and I’m going to use it up. (gasp!)

Colour Q Challenge 33 Vintage Vogue

  • Vintage Vogue and Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp sets; Very Vintage Wheel
  • Kiwi Kiss, Bermuda Bay, Whisper White and Summer Sun card stock
  • Kiwi Kiss, Soft Suede and Summer Sun Classic ink pads; Whisper White Craft ink pad
  • 1 1/4 inch, 1 3/8 inch square punches; Round tab punch; 1/8 inch circle punch (non-SU)
  • Soft Suede polka dot grosgrain ribbon; White gel pen
  • Big Shot and Lattice Impressions Folder

This is a Colour Q Challenge and when I saw it included Kiwi Kiss my first thought was to substitute Old Olive and continue hoarding my precious stash.  When I put the colors (oops!  Colours!) together I realized the brighter tone of the Kiwi Kiss made a big difference and I decided to be brave.  What’s the point of hoarding something if you never intend to use it?

I’m feeling very brave…maybe it’s time to go take a look into my closet.   Maybe…

All spritzed up and nowhere to go

Someone may have to pry the Smooch Spritz out of my hands…I think I’ve become dangerous.  A definite case of  “More is More”, and I’m not convinced it’s a good thing:

All Smooched up and nowhere to go

  • Vintage Vogue and Medallion Stamp sets; Very Vintage Wheel
  • Whisper White, Pretty in Pink, Melon Mambo and Close to Cocoa card stock
  • Pretty in Pink, Melon Mambo and Close to Cocoa Classic ink pads; Whisper White Craft ink pad
  • Melon Mambo Stampin’ Write marker, Vanilla Smooch Spritz
  • Scallop Trim Border punch, Rhinestone brad, Whisper White taffeta ribbon
  • 1/4″ circle punch and a teeny scrap of DSP – I think from SAB but don’t quote me

A couple of days ago I went on a rant about challenges that wouldn’t cooperate.  This card uses the survivors from that challenge – a lot of pieces went into the round file (trash) in my craft room.  I have to admit, my concept was good but it just wouldn’t tolerate being forced into a sketch that I disliked.  You can see I’m still playing with the same colors I used yesterday for the Inkspiration Challenge – it’s getting pretty girly around here.  Maybe tomorrow I’ll go Rasta for a change!
