Friends Are Like Seashells: June 2021 DIY

When I realized I had yet to create a seashells calendar I had a moment of disbelief: how had I neglected that? Never fear, the situation is remedied. And June is a lovely month to think of seashells and sandy shores and all things beachy:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Friends Are Like Seashells DIY Calendar June 2021
Friends A
  • Stamps: Friends Are Like Seashells
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Petal Pink, Soft Succulent, Crumb Cake
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Seashells dies, Blending Brushes, Stampin Dimensionals, Wink of Stella, Silver and Clear Epoxy Essentials, Water Painter

I was inspired by a very talented Aussie demonstrator named Narelle Farrugia. She’s on the Artisan Design Team for Stampin’ Up!, and when you see her work it’s clear why she earned that opportunity. Check out her work – I’m sure she’ll inspire you!

I used Petal Pink and the Blending Brushes to create a soft, tropical background, and used the Brushes on some of those die cut images as well to soften them. Color is a never-ending experiment for me, which is one of the reasons I love stamping so much. I don’t have to draw – and I’ve never been happy with the results when I do – so stamping allows me to focus on the parts that I like. These die cut images are layered with dimensionals and multi-purpose glue to create a little dimension on this tiny canvas.

I’m looking forward to seeing these seashells each day in my crafting space. I’m in the midst of a re-organization, and that’s messy work. These soothing colors and reminders of the beach will help me keep my focus.

Using Designer Series Paper with Garden Wishes

I love our Designer Series Paper (DSP). My favorite thing is the way it coordinates with our products, both colors and images. But wait, there’s more! I love the range of styles, the images themselves, and the perfect weight: not too heavy, not too light, jussst right. The fact that it’s two-sided (and often a multi-colored design on one side and a monochromatic design on the other) expands your crafting options even further.

DSP is an easy way to add interest or complexity to a simple design. With a couple of well-measured cuts, you have a quick addition to your project that often just makes it sing. Our Dandy Garden 6×6 DSP has been a star in the January-June Mini Catalog, and it’s going to retire at the end of June. It coordinates with both the Garden Wishes and Dragonfly Garden stamp sets, so it’s a real hero.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Dandy Garden DSP Garden Wishes
  • Stamps: Garden Wishes, Many Messages
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Mossy Meadow, BumbleBee, Basic Black
  • Accessories: Stitched Rectangle dies, Messages die, Stampin’ Blends, Mossy Meadow Braided Linen Trim*, Stampin Dimensionals, Wink of Stella, Dandy Garden DSP*
  • *Retiring June 30 and available while supplies last

I used the Daffodil Delight and Mossy Meadow Stampin’ Blends to color this image, and treated the light and dark toned Blends as separate shades. The Dandelion leaves need a light color and a soft touch to retain the detail in the images. I’ve also used a very old, long-retired tool to get that color spritz. I just can’t seem to pull off the paint-brush-flick with any reliable results!

I did a series of these cards with my clubs using the monochromatic papers from the Dandy Garden DSP pack, and I had a narrow strip of the Bumblebee Dandelion design left over. I really wanted to use it, and came up with the idea of adding the Mossy Meadow strip to the side in order to fill out the front of the card.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Dandy Garden DSP Garden Wishes

I used the same layout with a multi-hued DSP option from the same pack. It’s definitely colorful! This card includes one of the little ladybug embellishments that will retire the end of June. They’re the perfect size to secure with a Glue Dot.

One more Snail-y Mojo (Monday)

When I first saw the Mojo Monday 552 sketch, I envisioned it in Designer Series Paper. Once I started working, I switched to textured paper, but the idea of using DSP was still in my head. I finally got it out of my head and onto a card:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It MojoMonday552 Dandy Garden
  • Stamps: Snailed It, Lots of Heart, The Right Angle
  • Color Palette: Basic White, Memento Black, Calypso Coral, Mossy Meadow, Bumblebee
  • Accessories: Big Boss, Snail dies, Stitched Shapes dies, Painted Texture 3D Embossing Folder, Blending Brushes, Bumblebee Gingham Ribbon, Wink of Stella, Fine Tip Glue Pen, Stampin’ Dimensionals

The card sketch is the same – I followed the dimensions in the challenge – but this is the original layout. My first card made for this challenge was a mirror image of the design, since that snail was traveling East. This snail is Westward Ho!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It MojoMonday552 Dandy Garden

I’m totally sold on using Wink of Stella and the Fine Tip Glue pen to make eyes – any eyes – really sparkle. I don’t use the fine tip, I unscrew the entire top of the bottle and dip right in with a bamboo skewer. You need to let the excess drip back into the bottle, but I find it gives me better control when I want to “paint” with the glue.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snailed It MojoMonday552 Dandy Garden

The horizontal row of hearts in Lots of Heart is perfectly sized for adding to the envelope or the inside of the card – or both! Why be either/or when you can be both/and?? Ask yourself this more often.

Take that idea of Both/And with you to the Online Store and you too can be overrun with cute little paper snails! They’re highly preferable to the slimy kind, at least if you ask me. You may discuss amongst yourselves.

Sending Snail Mail

The only thing better than making cards is sending cards. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like getting a card in the mail, and I like to make cards! What a perfect match. The stars of my latest batch are the charming, bug-eyed snails from Snail Mail.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snail Mail Pretty Perennials Happy card
  • Stamps: Snailed It, Pretty Perennials
  • Color Palette: Whisper White, Basic Black, Purple Posy, Daffodil Delight
  • Accessories: Stampin’ Blends, Wink of Stella, Fine Tip Glue Pen

This is a pretty simple card without a lot of embellishment. The snail has a little Stella in her eyes, and I used the Fine Tip Glue Pen to make those black eyeballs good and shiny. Other than that, there’s some coloring and some doodling. This is a relaxing and enjoyable project!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snail Mail Pretty Perennials Happy card

Can you see the sparkle and shine? The combination really works for these hilarious eyeballs. I considered adding some Stella to the doodles running around the edge of the card, but it seemed a little too, well, snaily.

I mean, the truth is that I’m a gardener and snails are my arch-enemy out there! The Stampin’ Up! concept artists did an amazing job making these little critters so appealing, because in person, I like them NOT SO MUCH. (Also, in Hawaii we have ginormous snails, and that’s even more gross.)

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snail Mail Pretty Perennials Happy card

Once I got started I was on a roll. Coloring the snails is addicting. I’ve always loved to color, and Stampin’ Blends are such a satisfying coloring tool.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Snail Mail Pretty Perennials Happy card

I chose Flirty Flamingo, Calypso Coral, and Just Jade for this version. I used the same treatment on those big eyes – don’t you love the lashes?? Seriously. It must be such fun to dream these things up. I would need someone else in the room to call over and affirm my creative genius! I think that’s one of the things I miss most as a result of the pandemic. It’s such fun to craft alongside someone else, and try as she might, the cat doesn’t cut it.

So what do you think? Are these colors too far from reality? (Of course they are, I would freak out if I saw snails in my garden that looked like this.) I’m trying to decide if I dare try one in shades of blue…

Stitched Triangle Trees Two Ways

Our series of Stitched Dies – Stitched Triangles, Rectangles, Ovals, Circles, Labels – provide a quick and easy “step up” to any project. The Tree Angle stamps in the August – December mini catalog got me thinking, but in the end it was Tis the Season Designer Series Paper that made these cards come to life.

  • Stamps: Tree Angle, Poinsettia Petals, Birch
  • Color Palette: Whisper White, Real Red, Shaded Spruce, Mint Macaron
  • Accessories: Stitched Triangle dies, Stampin’ Cut & Emboss, Tasteful Textile Embossing Folder, All the Trimmings Embellishments, Rhinestone gems, Wink of Stella, Crinkle White Seam binding, Stampin’ Dimensionals

I love that little Bumblebee star at the top of the tree! That star was the reason I purchased the All the Trimmings Embellishments. I’m sure I’ll find a use for the Poppy Parade and Whisper White dots, but ooo that star!

It’s hard to see the texture from the Tasteful Textile EF, but it makes such a difference. It’s my current favorite EF because it has presence and it’s subtle (but not as subtle as the Subtle folder, ha!). There are other ways to accomplish texture, though:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Tis the Seasons Stitched Triangle Tree handmade card

I used the Birch background stamp, and one of my new techniques is to paint directly onto the stamp with Wink of Stella. Stella has enough shimmer that you can see it even without lighting.

You knew this was coming, right? I could keep going, as there are so many fun patterns in the Tis the Season paper stack – did I mention it’s 6×6? So much easier to store, and mentally so much easier to chop up. I’m making a very intentional effort to actually USE all of my DSP. (I know, what a concept.) Shop for everything you need at my Online Store.

Are you a bear lover? Don’t miss out on this charming Paper Pumpkin kit to be shipped in December. Popular kits have sold out, and this one is a candidate – subscribe today to be sure this little red package shows up in your mailbox!

Poinsettia Place: The Slimline Card

I’m a little late to the party on Slimline cards, but I’m happy with my first effort. Poinsettia Place was the first thing on my list for the August-December mini catalog, even though back in July my heart just wasn’t into Christmas crafting! News flash: it’s November and it’s time to get cracking.

  • Stamps: Poinsettia Place
  • Color Palette: Garden Green, Old Olive, Real Red, So Saffron, Soft Suede, Whisper White, Gold foil
  • Accessories: Poinsettia dies, Stamp Cut & Emboss, Poinsettia Place DSP, Gold Foil, Forever Greenery Trim Combo pack (Gold thread), Metallic Pearls, Stampin’ Dimensionals, Fluid 100 watercolor paper, Water Painters, Detailed Trio Punch, Red Rhinestone gems, Wink of Stella. (Phew! Did I miss anything?)

When I first started using the Gold trim, I struggled to keep it from unraveling. (TIP: put a little glue from the Fine Tip Glue pen on the cut end to stop it from fraying.) My OCD self has experienced enlightenment now, and I encourage it to unravel – I love all those little threads!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Poinsettia Place Slimline card handmade with custom envelope

This card measures 3 3/4″ x 8 3/4″ folded, or 7 1/2″ x 8 3/4″ unfolded. The envelope is very simple to create with the Simply Scored tool. I began with a piece of 8 1/2″ x 11″ card stock and with the long end across the top of my Simply Scored I marked 1 1/2″ and 10 1/2″. I turned the card stock a quarter turn so that the short end was across the top of the Simply Scored and marked 2″ and 6″. Cut away the rectangles at the four corners, fold along the score lines, and assemble the envelope with Stampin’ Seal+. I trimmed the top edges of the envelope before I adhered it so there would be a small reveal, and I cut a piece of Designer Series paper 3 3/8″ wide and 3″ long to line the top of the envelope. The Detailed Trio punch rounds the corners perfectly!

I used a few drops of ink refill in Real Red, Garden Green and Old Olive to watercolor the poinsettia and the leaves with our fabulous new Water Pens. These images are really forgiving, which made the watercoloring really enjoyable. I don’t have any formal art training, so it’s always an adventure to see how things turn out.

Rooted in Nature with the Acrylic Block Technique

I’m at it again with the Acrylic Block Technique, and I’m very pleased with this version. This is a single layer card with very limited embellishment, but the background technique catches your eye:

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Rooted in Nature Acrylic Block Technique
  • Stamps: Rooted in Nature, Beautiful Friendship, Forever Fern
  • Color Palette: Whisper White, Basic Black, Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, Pool Party
  • Accessories: Rhinestone jewel, Water brush, Acrylic Block H, Wink of Stella, Stampin’ Write Markers, Stampin’ Spritzer

The technique is simple. Scribble on an acrylic block with Stampin’ Write markers. If you place the block on a piece of white paper, you can see your color distribution and coverage. Mist the inky block with as little or as much water as you’d like – the amount you choose will impact the look you get – and press the block firmly into a Whisper White card stock panel. Lift and admire!

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Rooted in Nature Acrylic Block Technique

You need very sharp eyes to see the sparkle, but I painted the little splooshes stamp from Forever Fern with Wink of Stella and stamped it directly onto the card. It’s quite lovely in person, but challenging to photograph.

I also used our Water Painter and a bit of Pool Party ink to make very soft shadows underneath the trees.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Rooted in Nature Acrylic Block Technique

This could just as easily have been a Christmas card, or a birthday card, or any other type of card. I originally intended to post it without the sentiment, as I often leave that step for the moment I need a card. Having a variety of cards without sentiments allows me more flexibility when I need something at the very last minute. But this one looked forlorn, and I’m very glad I added the linear element of this wish.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Rooted in Nature Acrylic Block Technique

Don’t you agree? It’s more versatile to keep it this way but it’s much better with the sentiment (and my sentiment hides that little black bit that doesn’t belong!)

These is my favorite set of tonal colors: Bermuda Bay, Coastal Cabana, and Pool Party. Add them to your stash and see how happy they can make you! Shop HERE.

DIY July 2020: Celebrate Sunflowers

There are SO MANY GORGEOUS FLOWERS in the 2020-2021 Annual Catalog! I am a complete pushover for a gorgeous flower stamp set, and Celebrate Sunflowers definitely sent me over the edge. Two sizes of flowers, lots of leaves, great sentiments – well, what’s not to like?

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers DIY Calendar July 2020

These sunflowers are really fun to color with Stampin’ Blends. I have a pretty simple formula: follow the lines, start dark in the center and end up light on the ends.

Maui Stamper Stampin Up Celebrate Sunflowers DIY Calendar July 2020

It’s hard to see, but I added a l’il Wink of Stella to the center of the flowers. Stella makes EVERYTHING better. I’ve also used the masking technique to add a little dimension. There are die cuts for this set if you prefer that look, and they’re sold as a bundle with the stamp set so you can save when you choose both!

A Chunky Lamb…again!

How can you not love this lamb? This is the I-can-do-yoga, Upavista Konasana lamb! She is fluffy and has a perfect little half-smile that says “If I can do this, you can too!”

Well. But I cannot. My legs will not do that, no matter how I try. Even as a young girl, I could never do anything resembling the splits. But once again, I digress.

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Welcome Easter
Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Welcome Easter

Just cuz she’s fluffy doesn’t exclude the possibility that she’s sparkly too!!

Maui Stamper Stampin' Up! Welcome Easter

The Parisian Blossoms DSP is a specialty paper with foil embossing on one side of each sheet, and I think it adds the perfect glimmer to this card. That little silver foil ornamentation is from the Painted Labels dies which are sadly unavailable right now. Don’t have them? If you rummage through your stash of dies and even trims, I’ll bet you can find a substitute!

Have some fun with what you have – that’s the name of the game right now! And if there’s something you truly need, you can shop HERE!

Happy First of April!

I’m smitten with this little sheep, with her posture and her fluffiness. I can’t decide if she’s doing a seated wide angle yoga pose (Upavista Konasana) or if she’s a cheerleader doing the splits, but I know this: she’s pretty flexible!
