ADORABLE OWLS in GINGHAM

Gingham!! It’s timeless, it comes in limitless colors, and it’s a versatile design pattern. Today I’ve paired our Country Gingham 6×6 inch Designer Series paper (you need this!!) with some gingham ribbon and our Adorable Owls. I’ve love how it looks – what do you think??

Fun fact: the Gingham pattern was invented in the 1600’s with roots in Asia, possibly Malasia. After over 400 years of enduring popularity, I’d say it’s a pretty solid tradition!

These are square cards measuring 4 1/4″ x 4 1/4″. You can create an envelope to fit them precisely, but you’ll need to pay extra postage in the US for a non-machinable card. Or you can just grab our medium envelope and mail them in that – they don’t need to fill the whole thing!

Each of these owls has been fussy cut with Paper Snips. I know that’s a deal breaker for some crafters, but it’s not for me. Do what you love and be happy about it. If you don’t like to fussy cut, die cut that circle from Basic White card stock and add some stamping around the edge. Don’t stress, this is FUN.

The “Hoot hoot” owl has a sassy “come hither” backwards glance that cracks me up. And don’t let the prospect of coloring all these owls hold you back. They’re simple, and you can leave lots of white space as I did to simplify the task. Remember, we’re having FUN. (Says the Drill Sergeant Stamper.) The background stamp for this card is Spiral Dye, stamped again in Versamark. That’s one of my favorite ways to add texture – Versamark ink!

This owl was almost a tragedy. I colored the eyes with the Sweet Sorbet Stampin’ Blend marker, since that’s the color of the Gingham DSP. I IMMEDIATELY regretted my choice, as they had that creepy demon-in-the-night sort of look! I toned them down with a couple of the Natural Blends (sorry, don’t remember which ones as I was in a panic!!)

Do you see what I mean? Kinda spooky. But now you know, and you won’t make this mistake. (You’re welcome.)

Thankful Friends and Aspen Tree dies

I love trees. There were beautiful aspens growing outside my first apartment in college and this beautiful Aspen Tree die cut brings back memories of standing on the second floor deck, studying their intricate bark. (I know the leaf doesn’t match, I’m claiming artistic license.)

The clean edges of the die cut trees contrast well with the soft coloring achieved with daubers and the Blending Brush. Starry Sky is a perfect choice for a twilight sky behind the trees, and the little “dits” from Forever Fern suggest distant constellations.

I cut a stack of these Aspen Trees and keep finding new ways to style them. Gnomes, reindeer, birds, even Santa in a sleigh cutting across the sky would all work here, and in the spring, washes of rhododendron could fill the bottom half of the back panel. AMAZING YEAR meets the Scrap File

I took my paper snips to Amazing Year to create the focal point for this card. I colored the bouquet with my Stampin’ Blends and rummaged through the bits and pieces on my craft desk to pull a card together:

I had such fun preparing the Deckled Rectangle for this bouquet. A little watercolor wash, a few flicks from my Granny Apple Green Stampin’ Write marker (flick the brush against the cap – try it!) and that white panel is elevated to something special.

The two different pieces of DSP were scraps just begging to be used. In the photo, that green panel looks like it’s been embossed, but it’s just the design of the DSP popping off the page. It worked really well with the Timeworn Type 3D Embossing Folder.

A little bakers twine, pulled apart and tied into a soft bow, accents the bouquet. I trimmed the “Enjoy Your Day” tag off the stem and attached it separately because 1) the connection was too thin and it would be wonky and 2) I wanted it tucked almost underneath the bouquet. It’s a great sentiment because it covers a lot of occasions.

September 2022 DIY: Amazing Year

This image was very satisfying to color. I stayed with two tones, yellow and green, but played with shades of green to give those tiny leaves dimension. This is one of those “you can’t do it badly” images!

I combined the two main images from the set to create this package with a bouquet. I also trimmed off the “Enjoy your day” tag and so that I could choose the placement. There isn’t much to keep it attached, so it’s much more secure this way.

This card actually began as a Stampin’ Blends practice project. I wanted to work on shading, and that bear was my subject. I really liked the way it turned out, but it sat on my craft desk for a long time waiting for the right moment. When I started thinking about swaps, this card came together almost by itself.

Backstage has allowed the demonstrator leaders to finally able to meet one another in person. Covid has limited our opportunities to gather, and I’m sure many of you will agree that virtual gatherings only go so far. Since Stampin’ Up! is a multi-national organization, I’ve had the chance to meet fellow demonstrators from Europe and the South Pacific as well as the U.S and Canada this week. To say it’s been amazing would be an understatement.

I had such a good time with the bear, I decided to try the kangaroo as well. My eldest daughter is an Aussie, so the ‘roo is practically a member of the family.

In terms of coloring, this is actually a relatively simple project – just the critter and the poppies. There’s enough shading to keep it interesting, but not so much that you can’t do a few for some of your best new friends in the world.

Splendid Day + Organic Beauty

To be honest, I bought the entire True Beauty bundle for this gorgeous lattice die:

That die pops right out when you run it through the Big Boss. The lattice takes this – or any project – straight to the top. I used a little Tombo Multipurpose Glue to adhere it to the card base. I like Tombo better than the Fine Tip Glue pen in this situation because it doesn’t dry as quickly. It takes me a while to make my way around the lattice.

PRO TIP: When you’re using Tombo to get coverage on a detailed die, pour a little puddle onto a piece of scrap paper. Use any pointy tool to dab and drop the adhesive. I like to use a bamboo skewer so I can toss it when it gets gunky.

This card doesn’t have a sentiment on the front. When I’m ready to send it, I’ll choose the sentiment that fits the occasion and stamp it inside. Having a stash of cards waiting for a sentiment has saved this last-minute girl many times!!

Once again I’ve used our Metallic Woven Ribbon to make a whispy embellishment. I tie a small overhand knot in the center of a strand, then tease out the threads with my TakeYourPick tool. I put a glue dot behind the knot and tuck it into my die cut image. My Hippie Hippo 2.0

Last month I created a card combining Hippest Hippo from Sale-a-bration with Spiral Dye, and I loved it so much I did it again!

I used the Stamparatus with that big Spiral Dye stamp. It helps me position the image straight on the card stock, and it’s easier to thoroughly press on all parts of the stamp. If it doesn’t cover perfectly, the Stamparatus lets me stamp again in the exact same spot! Love it.

I only used 3 colors this time instead of the 4 I used in the First Version. It looks like there’s a little Gorgeous Grape in there, but that’s just the wonder of color blending: Pink + Blue = Purple!

I chose a different hippo and another greeting, but the part I love best is the Metallic Woven Ribbon. I hardly ever use it as a ribbon! In this case I cut a few inches of Sweet Sorbet and Parakeet Party and tied a knot in the center. Using the Take Your Pick tool, I pulled the threads out and then tucked the knot under the hippo. Instant fringe!

Let’s Make It an Amazing Year

Amazing Year caught my eye the first time I flipped through the Annual Catalog. We have lots of flowers, but not so many bouquets, and this one can stand all by itself:

I went a little outside my comfort zone coloring this image. I added in a lot of different colors, because Mother Nature does that, right?

With all that color, I kept the base and panel Basic White. To add a little distinction, I brushed the edges of the Deckle Rectangle 💕 with Highland Heather, and I flicked a paintbrush with a little ink refill in a puddle of water to create watercolor droplets for the card base. I shredded the metallic woven ribbon with the pointy bit of my pick tool, then gathered up the threads to tie a bow. They need a dab of liquid glue to keep them from coming undone.

Hippo in Wonderland

“Hippo, whoooo are youuuuu?” said the Caterpillar (apologies to Lewis Carroll). There’s no caterpillar here, but that winking Hippo is pretty sassy all the same!

I experimented with a lot of Hippo colors, but ultimately decided that my card looked best if the Hippo shared the same colors as the wooden door on the mushroom. I used our new Naturals line of Stampin’ Blends to color them both.

The Storybook Gnomes DSP is a real find! Great colors, great images, and it really makes a card pop. It also helped direct my color choices for this card, and I don’t think I would have used Pale Papaya without that inspiration.

I used a teeny splash of pool party on this Hippo’s eyes and in the window panes. I considered putting a little smooch on that kisser, but decided that would just be lipstick on a…well, you know.

Floating Sunset

When I saw Laura’s Floating Sunset Palm card I did a little happy dance. I knew this was a card I would love making again and again, and the Paradise Palms bundle absolutely makes this project!

The technique is really simple: cut a circle from our window sheets and adhere strips of colored card stock. I chose to vary their width, which also allowed me to include more colors. 😁 I added a little color to the palm, and used Starry Sky to wash the watercolor paper with color for the background.

I made a second version with the sun sinking into the water. I considered changing the color of the background for this, but honestly, this is how it looks when I watch the sun go down, so I kept it.

The inside of this card was begging for these 3 palms, which I colored with Stampin’ Write markers.
