DECEMBER 2023 DIY: TRUCKING ALONG

Who doesn’t love a truck? This vintage truck just begs to be done in red, and what could be more fitting for December?

I’m sorry if you don’t have a palm tree stamp in your stash. After I stamped the truck, all I could see was palms in the background. If you don’t live in a tropical climate, then evergreens are surely your best friend here.

I discovered at the last minute that my Light Real Red Stampin’ Blend was kaput. I colored the truck with the Dark Real Red Blend and added highlights with the Color Lifter. The “dits” are a stamp from Seaside Bay, and I imagined them as sea spray.

A Little Trailer in the Trees

If you weren’t able to pick up the Tree Lot dies as a Sale-a-bration reward, they’ve sold out. I’m so sorry, because everyone should have the chance to craft this little trailer!

I mixed and matched the Old Olive and Pear Pizazz ink when I stamped the trees, and I’m not sure if I have a favorite. After all, trees are unique, and the fact that each of these are a little different is pretty true to life. I used a small piece of vellum in the “windows” and then placed the die cuts behind them so you didn’t see through the window to the trees.

Oh, and I stamped “Happy Birthday” just a little bit crooked on purpose. That’s so you know it’s made by hand 🤩

There are a lot of options for creating this card with other focal points. Try the tent from Campology, or the deer from Grassy Grove. You might just have something perfect in your stash! My favorite part of the Hippo dies is all the accessories – I’m not sure if these are supposed to be sunglasses or part of the snorkel, but I love them as regular glasses! The heart is part of those bonus images as well.

The Artistic Mix Decorative Masks are designed so that they can be used together – I’ve just used one here, but it’s addictive to layer them and see what you get.

Making your own cards allows you options you don’t find in the store. I love to add images to the inside of my card as well as the envelope. I layer a 4″ x 5 1/4″ piece of Basic White or Very Vanilla (depending on the card colors) on the inside of every colored card base. It’s a perfect way to dress up the inside of the card, especially when you add palms! (Everything is better with palm trees.)

Hand Penned 3D Ferns

The Fern 3D Embossing Folder is back with a different look today. I’ve run it through the Big Boss with Orchid Oasis card stock, and WOW does it shout out loud!

Parakeet Party is a bold and bright green, and it really makes this card pop. It has such high energy, and moves this design into a very different feeling than you would get from Pear Pizazz or even Granny Apple Green. I love the opportunity to work with new colors each year when our In Color collection releases.

I slipped a little metallic woven ribbon in again, fraying just the ends this time. I hardly ever bother tying a bow any more. I just stick a glue dot where it will be hidden by an element on the front of the card and position the ribbon that way. It’s easier to move and adjust so that you get exactly the look you want without tying and tying and tying again.

Floating Sunset

When I saw Laura’s Floating Sunset Palm card I did a little happy dance. I knew this was a card I would love making again and again, and the Paradise Palms bundle absolutely makes this project!

The technique is really simple: cut a circle from our window sheets and adhere strips of colored card stock. I chose to vary their width, which also allowed me to include more colors. 😁 I added a little color to the palm, and used Starry Sky to wash the watercolor paper with color for the background.

I made a second version with the sun sinking into the water. I considered changing the color of the background for this, but honestly, this is how it looks when I watch the sun go down, so I kept it.

The inside of this card was begging for these 3 palms, which I colored with Stampin’ Write markers.

Do you see that label on my stamp case? 22JJ? I embraced my inner nerd and made labels for each case to indicate the catalog where they first appeared. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to dig back for that information, so now when my order comes I get out my label maker and put labels on EVERYTHING.

February 2022 DIY: Driving By

If you’re not on sunny Maui, you might need a bit of Sunshine and Rainbows today. How about a whimsical VW bus driving through your February DIY Calendar?

I used the paper piecing technique with the bus. I stamped it once on one of the striped patterns from the Sunshine and Rainbow DSP, and then again on a piece of Basic White. I used Blends to color the top, wheels, bumpers and windows of the bus. Then I removed the top, wheels, bumpers and windows of the bus from the DSP version and adhered it to the Basic White version.

I made a road using the curve from the Basic Borders dies and the White Watercolor Pencil. I measured another piece of the Sunshine and Rainbows DSP to fit behind the bus and the road and used multipurpose glue to adhere all of those layers – except the bus, the bus had to be on Dimensionals.

If we ever stop carrying Stampin’ Dimensionals I will be unable to function.

The palms – oh my gosh, Stampin’ Up! has heard me mutter – those palms were inked with Stampin’ Write markers and cut out with the dies. It took me a hot minute to figure out how I wanted to line everything up, but lah-dee-dah, I am pretty pleased with the results! What do you think?
