A swap in Blue and Green

Swap number two:  SURPRISE!  Blue and Green!  (I KNOW!!)

The first time I used this design and color collage , I trimmed the edge.  It was a Very Long Edge.  The more I thought about doing that 65 times, the more I thought I needed another design.  There was still quite a bit of work involved in masking all these panels in order to get the Designer Series Paper effect, but it was much easier than hand trimming all of those edges.  A girl has to draw the line somewhere.

A note to the WOW swappers:  if you received one of these cards and it didn’t look exactly like this, please accept my heartfelt apologies.  I ran out of Pear Pizazz Seam Binding and was scrambling for a substitute.  (There were 2 rolls of Pear Pizazz seam binding with my name on them on a Fedex truck someplace in Honolulu; the nerve of Fedex.  They could have gotten it to me on Friday if they had REALLY tried.)  Some cards got 1/4 inch Old Olive grosgrain, and other had the retired 3/8 inch Old Olive taffeta.  To make the card current, the Designer Label should lift off pretty easily and you can remove the old ribbon and add in the new.

I’m heading back home from Convention today, and it’s time I shared my swaps.  I made two different cards for a WOW swap and this is the first of the two:

Christmas Pennant Tree Swap 2011

I was initially afraid this card didn’t qualify as a WOW swap, but two things changed my mind.  The first was the reaction I got from a group of demos (OK, they’re my friends and of course they’re biased) and the second was how many steps it took to make 65 of these!  I love detail, and I’m not willing to compromise once I’ve found a design I love, so I stamped and punched, and assembled and tied little knots, and ran cardstock through the Big Shot, and layered and embellished until I was cross-eyed.  I confess that I don’t enjoy production in quantity, but once a year for convention I make an exception because of the wonderful swaps I bring home in exchange.

My card as I swapped it used the Sassy Sparkles wheel.  I know it seems a little early to think of Christmas (and it gives me a little feeling of panic to realize we’re halfway through JULY) but crafters think ahead.  With the amount of work this card took, I have a funny feeling it won’t make it into the final voting round for my family card this year!  Back to the drawing board…and the year is still young.

How about a little Vintage Style?

Love this First Edition paper!  Fun and easy to work with – it’s very smooth and light-weight and takes to tearing and crumpling quite well.  It’s become something of a “go-to” paper in my stash because it blends in with everything…sort of the Little Black Dress of papercrafting.  I just have to remember to pair it with Very Vanilla instead of Whisper White.  You would think that would be obvious.

I tweaked this card a little bit and am taking a few to Salt Lake City for convention to swap.  Convention will be a fresh experience for me this year as I’m sharing it with some of the Maui Stampers team.  The first time I attended, I roomed with a wonderful Canadian demonstrator (Hi Wendy!) that I met through another Canadian demonstrator who came to one of my classes when she was on Maui (Hi Jane!)  I felt like an honorary Canadian that week, and they showed a rookie the ropes of Convention.  Last year Robbie and I took our 60’s gig on the road and had a blast, and we came back and did our best to motivate (is jealousy a motivator??) our teammates to join us.  I’m looking forward to sharing this experience, and to meeting new friends and re-connecting with others.

If you are a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator you NEED to be at Convention.  The energy is incredible, the displays are eye-popping, the classes are very informative, the relationships are affirming, and we are raking in the FREE STUFF!!  Plan on being here next year!

Isn’t that a fabulous jacket?  We convinced her to get it – the rest of us couldn’t wear that color EVER but she looks great!

We have seen some fabulous projects, including all the new Holiday Mini product available starting September 1.  If you love Halloween, or Thanksgiving, or Christmas, or even all three, this mini will knock your socks off.  I like Halloween well enough, but I could become a super-Halloween-fan like Robbie with enough projects like this:

Pick Your Poison

If I tried to tell you about all of the wonderful experiences I had today with the most caring, funny, talented, creative, incredible Stampin’ Up! demonstrators you have ever met I would be here until tomorrow, and I’m much too tired tonight for that.  Just trust me when I say these experiences have touched me in ways I couldn’t imagine.  If you’re not here because you’re not a demonstrator, maybe it’s time you gave it serious thought.  It’s only $99 this month – visit my Online Store for details.

Finding the right words

Sympathy cards are a challenge for me.  It’s hard to get just the right balance, much less put into words those feelings that are really wordless.  There have been a couple of difficult losses in our community recently, and each called for something unique.  I made this card for a family who lost a brilliant, compassionate, loving husband and father after a long battle with leukemia:

I chose these bold colors to convey life and vibrancy.  I’ve experienced my share of loss, and in for me it’s the emotion, not the words that convey sympathy.  When you can share in person, you can say so much with touch – a hug, a squeeze of the hand – and the wordless communication in your eyes.  I won’t be able to see my friends in person, and I hope this small token of my love brings some comfort to them.

it’s the Stampin’ Up! Annual Convention!!

Time for bed here in Salt Lake, though my body insists it is much too early.  Such a full, fabulous day, beginning with Memento Mall (Stampin’ Up! shopping at the highest level) and ending with a fun, silly party and a photo with a half a zillion of my new best friends.

Convention 2011 - Robbie, Cheryl and Kellie

OK, the truth is, it ended with a glass of Pinot Noir with Robbie and Cheryl in the lounge at our hotel.

There’s nothing like a Stampin’ Up! convention.  Heaps of energetic, friendly, generous people (primarily women) meeting one another, sharing ideas, laughing and telling stories and connecting over bits of paper.  You can’t believe it unless you see it, and I highly recommend it if you’ve never tried it.  (PS you can become a demonstrator for only $99 this month – go to my Online Store and click “Join Now” for more information).

Kellie, Peggy, Robbie, Cheryl and I shopped at Memento Mall, ooohed and aaahed fabulous displays in the Demonstrator Resource Center, and toured the offices and distribution center (when I said we had to leave for our Riverton Tour Kellie said she felt like a kid on Christmas morning having to leave her toys behind to go to Grandma’s house). Robbie won a prize patrol and came home with new stamps from the opening party, and we’re all trying to fall asleep before 1am so we can get up bright and early for opening session tomorrow.

If I had to choose only one color combination to work with it forever would be blue with green:

Love these stamps, love this technique, love this look!  More masking – yep, you’ll see this again – and some vellum too.  My cards were starting to have a “same-same” feeling to them and I’ve been looking for ways to switch them up.  New colors certainly help, and of course new stamps always make a big difference, but I wanted a different feeling.

Finding a new layout always makes a difference.  There are loads of sources for new sketches and many of them have challenges – Mojo Monday is one of my favorites.  Sometimes a sketch seems to fall into place, and other times it becomes a battle, but new sketches are a great way to bring some freshness to your projects.

I like the trimmed edge on this card, making the floral collage into one giant focal point.  Don’t be intimidated because it’s just not that hard!  It’s a quick way to give your card new perspective.

Never enough Manly cards

Every time I need a Manly Birthday Card, I come up short.  Today’s mission?  Build up the Manly Card Stash:

I was going for a pennant effect here, but every time I look at this card I see a shirt front.  Must be that button.  Shirt front, pennant, whatever – they both have a masculine feel.

I’m always running short of masculine cards.  I mean, face it – cards with flowers and butterflies and sparkly jewels are lots of fun!  Cards with motors and tools and shirt fronts are…fun too, but it’s not the same type of fun.  I may have to impose a Manly Card Quota on myself.

Hmm.  Check back with me on that one.

Do you like my “Button”?  If you’ve got the Big Shot and the Sweet Buttons Embosslit, you can create a faux button in multiple sizes and just about any color you desire.

This may come as an enormous shock, but I am not very good at planning ahead.  I have the BEST of intentions, but when it comes down to it I am generally scrambling like a mad woman at the last minute.  Time is just so slippery!  As a result, I neeed flexible resources, and this Button Embosslit suits my needs perfectly.

This is a pretty bright and bold card for my usual style.  I like to step outside of my comfort zone from time to time, and I think this card should cover me for quite a while!  Not sure I’ll be jumping into these colors again anytime real soon, but it’s fun to stretch.
